The Learning Curve

This image illustrates the learning curve that new bowlers and those who are looking to improve often experience.

The yellow line represents average improvement through experience alone. As we play more games, we naturally learn from our successes and mistakes, and our ability gradually improves over time.

The dark green line represents a different path—the path of deliberate improvement. As you learn more about the game, seek coaching, and work to implement new techniques, your performance may initially decline. This is what I playfully call the "Pit of Despair." You know the best practices, but you're still learning how to apply them consistently in your own game.

Many bowlers stop here and return to what feels comfortable. However, those who stay patient, trust the process, and continue practicing eventually break through to a level of consistency and performance that experience alone cannot provide.

To reach your full potential, it's not enough to simply play more games. You must identify the techniques that work best for your body, practice them deliberately, and apply them consistently under pressure.

Remember: games test your skills; practice builds them.

Coaching Tip #1

Whether you are throwing a draw or a drive the fundamentals stay the same!
1. Knee, shoulders and chin out over and beyond front foot. (Short step)
2. Weight forward and completely off the back foot. (Heel off ground)
3. Eyes forward down the green and ability to hold your release position for at least 3 seconds to ensure effective follow through.
