Concerts in Care brings the inspiring music and performances of Canada’s most distinguished professional musicians into the homes of our elderly, frail and often isolated citizens. During a 45-minute concert, residents in institutional long-term care experience the joy and beauty of great live music. It helps build communities. Health Arts Society (BC) was founded in the first days of 2006 to meet the clear need for live professional arts programmes for people in health care sites. The largest audiences in health care for arts programmes are found in residences for elders. Many of these people will be unable to access live music or theatre arts for the rest of their lives. Most public health authorities do not have mandated standards or budgets for providing quality of life programmes for people living in chronic care residences. Occupational therapy and recreation staff make valiant efforts to provide programmes but the cost of them is stripped from already pressed operating budgets. Health Arts Society wants to see this situation change and its concert programme is an agent of that change. This is the official social media channel of the Health Arts Society of Ontario. A recent study found that when older adults listened "autobiographical music" – aka songs that held personal emotional significance for them – they experienced strong positive emotions and vivid memories of family, relationships, work, and other meaningful life experiences. Researchers suggest these musically-evoked memories could play an important role in supporting cognitive health, and may even have potential as a non-pharmacological approach for age-related cognitive decline.

It's one of the many reasons we're so passionate about bringing meaningful live music to seniors across Ontario. Every song has the potential to unlock a memory, and have a big impact on the seniors we serve.
