Concerts in Care brings the inspiring music and performances of Canada’s most distinguished professional musicians into the homes of our elderly, frail and often isolated citizens. During a 45-minute concert, residents in institutional long-term care experience the joy and beauty of great live music. It helps build communities. Concerts in Care is important in building that sense of community within long term residential homes

Health Arts Society (BC) was founded in the first days of 2006 to meet the clear need for live professional arts programmes for people in health care sites. The largest audiences in health care for arts programmes are found in residences for elders. Many of these people will be unable to access live music or theatre arts for the rest of their lives. Most public health authorities do not have mandated standards or budgets for providing quality of life programmes for people living in chronic care residences. Occupational therapy and recreation staff make valiant efforts to provide programmes but the cost of them is stripped from already pressed operating budgets. Health Arts Society wants to see this situation change and its concert programme is an agent of that change. This is the official social media channel of the Health Arts Society of Ontario. October 1 is National Seniors Day: an opportunity to celebrate older adults across Canada and recognize the many contributions they make to our families, communities, and society.

The National Health Arts Network - Health Arts Society/Concerts in Care/LaSAMS - delivers professional concerts of all kinds of music that connect older adults across Canada with exceptional live music experiences. We are the largest pan-Canadian arts provider for seniors —a sector society consistently undervalues and neglects.

Together, we facilitate social connections, foster wellness, mitigate loneliness, and build community by bringing seniors together to share in the joy of concert-hall-quality performances that are close to home in long-term and memory care, community centres, libraries, hospitals, retirement homes, supportive housing and shelters, palliative care, and seniors’ day programs.

Collectively – and with the help of our funders, including Sienna For Seniors Foundation, BMO Financial Group, The Azrieli Foundation, and the Bennett Family Foundation – we deliver more than 3,400 concerts nationwide annually, bringing joy, connection, memories, and meaningful music to 159,000 seniors, staff, and community caregivers nationwide. 🎶🇨🇦

Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honour the children who never returned home, the survivors of residential schools, and the families and communities who continue to live with the impacts of these systems.

We know music can have a powerful impact on seniors in care. But what about the people caring for them? 🎵

That's one of the questions we explored through CreateMore, our three-year research and performance project with Sheridan College Centre for Elder Research, Schlegel Villages, and LUCID.

Across 222 concerts in 14 Schlegel Villages, we saw joy, connection, and some surprising ripple effects, including the ways live music affected frontline staff.

We've now wrapped up this incredible project, and we're excited to share what we learned.
