In partnership with organizations like Full Circle: First Nations Performance, En'owkin Centre, Centre for Indigenous Theatre and others, we have identified the Seven Baskets—seven guiding principles that honor Indigenous knowledge, traditions, and self-determination.

Here’s what they represent:

🌎 Land-Based
Centering land-based teachings and methods, grounded in the land that sustains us.

🤝 Community-Centered
Actively seek feedback from Indigenous communities to ensure they will benefit.

🕊️ Honour the Participant
Honour Elders, mentors, teachers, participants, students, and mentees in all spaces.

📚 Indigenous Pedagogy
Incorporate Indigenous knowledge, histories, and languages in educational practices.

🪶 Respect Driven
Always consider and respect the existing conditions of Indigenous lives and experiences.

✊ Decolonize
Challenge competition and hierarchy; foster Indigenous self-determination, governance, and Indigenous values.

📊 Metrics of Success
Develop Indigenous metrics that reflect meaningful success beyond conventional measures.

Together, these Seven Baskets guide us toward a future of mutual respect, deep learning, and shared leadership. We are proud to stand by these principles as we continue this journey. 🌱

🌿 Our Guiding Principles 🌿

At IAKE, we are committed to working within the 5 R’s—guiding principles that honor Indigenous knowledge and ways of knowing. Adapted from the work of Indigenous scholars like Linda Tuhiwai Smith and Shawn Wilson, these principles shape how we connect, create, and collaborate:

🔑 Respect: We honor the perspectives, values, and traditions of Indigenous communities.

💡 Responsibility: We are accountable for the impact of our actions on people, land, and culture.

🌱 Relevance: We ensure our work is meaningful and aligned with the needs of communities.

🤝 Relationality: We build deep, authentic relationships that foster trust and collaboration.

💞 Reciprocity: We exchange knowledge, resources, and support, creating mutual benefit for all involved.

Together, these principles guide us toward meaningful, respectful, and sustainable impact. 🌍
