Last Tuesday it was very hot and we kept to the shade - digging out a patch of invasive lily-of-the-valley and pulling some garlic mustard. Expecting nice weather tomorrow. Please consider joining us on Tuesday at Leaside Park from 5:30 to 7 PM. Meet us by the playground.

Tonight we worked as a team to dig out a large area of invasive Creeping Bellflower and Goutweed to make room for native plants to grow and fill in the gaps. We will work on this area more this season.

Last Tuesday we filled two garbage bags with Garlic Mustard that we pulled throughout Leaside Park site. There will be more to pull over the next few week but it was a great start. We walked through our old and new extension areas to see what was growing and what needed attention (found a patch of Lily of the Valley that we will remove and found many Avens that we will check after further growth to determine which are native and which are not). We found Trillium in bloom and many Mayapples climbing the steep hillsides. We took in the beautiful view from a particularly scenic viewpoint and stayed still and quiet for a bit to observe a deer descending into the valley.

We meet Tuesday’s at 5:30 PM at the playground.

Tomorrow we will removing invasive garlic mustard from Leaside Park. We will meet at 5:30 PM near the playground. Join us if you can or come by say hello.

Garlic mustard is one of the most prevalent invasive plants at our stewardship sites across the city. It usually blooms in early May so now is the time to start removing it and making room for native plants. We have removed garlic mustard each year of our three years working at Leaside Park and each year there is less than the year before 🤞- progress is being made.

“Garlic mustard has two distinct life stages over its first two years. In the first year, it grows only a cluster of leaves shaped like a rosette, while a strong root system develops. Plants that survive the winter produce flowers and hundreds of seeds in their second year. Dense stands produce more than 60,000 seeds per square metre. Stands of garlic mustard can double in size every four years.
Garlic mustard seeds are easily spread by people and animals.”

We held our first Tuesday stewardship session in 2026. We spread wood chips over a muddy path, cut down several non-native Honeysuckle bushes, removed some early Garlic Mustard, and picked up some litter along the way. We walked the site looking for spring ephemerals. We spotted many, including Virginia Waterleaf, Trout Lilly, White Trillium, Spring Beauty, and Wild Leek. A great start to the stewardship season!
