A bit about why we chose SCICanucks…
The word Canuck is a friendly, endearing term for a Canadian, eh? And since we are Spinal Cord Injury Canada, and we are a community of friendly and endearing people, we think being known as a Canuck is a good thing! Not to mention, all the other SCI Canada, SCI Can, SCI ca, etc handles were taken.
But our favourite reason for using SCICanucks has to do with Johnny Canuck. Johnny Canuck was a Canadian comic book hero featured in the 1940s. He fought the N**i regime. The founders of Spinal Cord Injury Canada, John Counsell, Ken Langford and Andy Clark, were also Canadian heroes. Back in 1945, a spinal cord injury could have been a death sentence. Most people didn’t live past a year. Spinal Cord Injury Canada was first called the Canadian Paraplegic Association because people didn’t live with quadriplegia back then. Our founders came home from WWII with spinal cord injuries and decided to form an organization to provide support, friendship and strength as well as to promote access and inclusion. Over 70 years later, we are still assisting people with spinal cord injuries and other physical disabilities to live dignified, inclusive and meaningful lives. We honour our founders with our social media name on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
