The Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP) is the largest and longest longitudinal study on gender in the world’s news media. It is also the largest advocacy initiative in the world for gender justice in the news media. The GMMP is unique because it involves volunteer participants from grassroots community organizations, university students, academic researchers, media practitioners and others int

erested in gender and communication. The most recent global media monitoring days took place in 2020–2021 in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Check out the global, regional, and national research reports for findings from this 6th GMMP: https://whomakesthenews.org/gmmp-2020-final-reports/

“We are now doing underground journalism under the Taliban regime. My colleagues are very brave. Most of them are female, and they are working in secret. The Taliban have weaponized every single law against women and that's why it's so important for me and my colleagues to amplify the voice of millions of women back home.”
—Zahra Joya, founder and editor-in-chief of Rukhshana Media -

Nearly five years into Taliban rule, Afghan women are being systematically silenced under what many in the international community describe as gender apartheid. Making their voices heard is both dangerous and extraordinarily difficult. Afghan female journalists are forced to work in clandestine cond...

Ending gender-based violence – especially in digital and media spaces – requires bold thinking, stronger accountability of institutions and platforms, and a clear commitment to centering survivors’ experiences.

🔸 Contexts differ but many of the challenges are similar
🔸 Local realities must inform global processes
🔸 The very understanding of justice needs a rethink
🔸 Survivors are not only recipients of support but also key actors in shaping effective solutions

“this dialogue will confront the disconnect between international commitments and the lived realities of women journalists, from gaps in ratification and implementation to external threats, sources, and digital attacks.

At a time when media safety is under increasing pressure, the question remains: how do we move from commitment to real protection?”

This is a conversation the media space cannot afford to ignore.

On April 30th, African Women in Media (AWiM) is partnering with Women in the Media Sierra Leone (WIMSAL), the International Press Institute (IPI), and EmpowerHer to host:

The Policy Gap: Identifying Barriers to Ratification

Bringing together regional experts, this dialogue will confront the disconnect between international commitments and the lived realities of women journalists, from gaps in ratification and implementation to external threats, sources, and digital attacks.

At a time when media safety is under increasing pressure, the question remains: how do we move from commitment to real protection?

was at the 3rd Festival Juntanza! Our regional coordinator for Latin America & national coordinator for Mexico (Prensa Cimac) presented findings, with special report from GMMP Cuba (SEMlac-Cuba. Comunicación para la equidad) & the Spanish-speaking Caribbean.

Findings from Latin America and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean formed the focus of a session dedicated to the Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP), WACC, the flagship initiative to advance gender justice in and through the media.

The stagnation or setbacks in gender indicators revealed by the 2025 GMMP are “a challenge to the dignity of women and men, linked to all dimensions of life,” said Cirenia Celestino Ortega (right), GMMP coordinator for Latin America and Mexico and director of Prensa Cimac, a WACC partner in Mexico.

Presenting together with Cirenia were Lisandra Fariñas Acosta, SEMlac-Cuba. Comunicación para la equidad, GMMP Cuba coordinator, and Maximiliano Dueñas Guzmán, GMMP regional coordinator for the Spanish-speaking Caribbean, UPR Humacao.
