Big on Beagles Rescue

Big on Beagles Rescue Big on Beagles (BOB) Rescue is a Toronto/Durham Region-based assistance agency for beagles experiencing troubled times. We're here for the under-beagle.

Our focus is the rescue of senior beagles, sick, injured, and those suffering from emotional trauma. BOB is here to help the not so fortunate, i.e. abandoned special needs beagles including senior beagles - some with serious and/or chronic health issues, those in desperate need of medical procedures, those suffering from physical or emotional trauma terminally ill, the sad scenarios are endless. I

n a nutshell, BOB lends a paw to the under-Beagle in need of a second chance. Beagles entering BOB's program are usually coming from animal shelters that have not been successful in matching them with families, deeming them 'Unadoptable' to the general public. The kind staff working at these facilities will call BOB for assistance. Giving up on an unwanted beagle is not an option for these caretakers and BOB is always grateful for their phone calls. Sometimes, it's quiet on the rescue front and BOB can focus on its long-term care palliative beagles. Other times, the calls are pouring in and there are not enough BOB foster parents available. That's why BOB is always sniffing out reliable, dedicated beagle lovers who are willing to open their doors and their hearts to a down-on-his-luck beagle until a permanent home can be found. Fostering is not easy, mind you, but your efforts are rewarded tenfold when that beagle finds the perfect family - all because of YOU!!! To learn more about fostering or adoption, visit our web site at bigonbeagles.ca

On the other paw, if you own a beagle and can no longer care for him, you are also welcome to contact BOB. We understand that unforeseen circumstances can lead to such a heartbreaking decision. BOB will lend support and advice on how to find a new home for your companion. In fact, BOB may have a prospective owner looking for a beagle right now and your dog may be a potential match. The work BOB performs for the love of beagles is not without sacrifice and an unwavering commitment to the cause. Veterinary care for our beagles is expensive, but we make a promise to every dog that enters our program, ensuring the dogs get all they need right from the start. Even if you're unable to foster or adopt, you can still help by making a donation so that more beagles can benefit from our specialized care. Your support, no matter the size, makes an impact to the lives of our Beagles and means so very much to us. On behalf of the beagles in our care, thank you for your kind interest by visiting our page.

Oops! I did it again!

When Marna & my foster mom wouldn’t stop chitchatting outside the car after my gruelling 8hr day at the vet, I laid on the horn, baby! Time to go HOME, mom! I’ve had a day!

Also, thanks for loving me so much with all your nice words. I feel like a celebrity or something. In fact, when I was getting that Cushings test, I did NOT like being in the kennel so my medical team transferred me to the Luxury Condo! I guess it wasn’t the worst day ever. Just don’t tell my foster mom! ❤️

Positive Energy needed today for New Arrival Dolly! She’s undergoing the 8hr Low Dose Dex testing for Cushings at our vets today.

Considering the fact she’s not the most patient girl, Dolly is probably gonna be restless and inconsolable all day long. We know this from her road trip to Grandma’s on Mother’s Day…Foster mom had to make a quick pit stop at a gas station along the way after all the coffee she’d had. Let’s just say Dolly knows how to use the car horn. 🤭

"Hello Dolly,
Well Hello, Dolly
It's so nice to have you back where you belong…"
(Song by Louis Armstrong)

Some rescue stories happen in the wink of an eye.
In the time it takes to sing an old, familiar song of joy and optimism.

Not to say our hearts didn’t break a little at first sight of Dolly.
No, our hearts didn’t sing then.

One of the worst cases of obesity this beagle repair shop has ever seen.

There is a 9-point scale used by veterinarians for optimal body condition, ranging from too thin
to the other end of the spectrum.
Dolly is quite literally tipping the scales to that other end at 9 - the worst grading for excessive weight.

She is the very definition of obese.
And at 8-10 years old, poor Dolly is at high risk for a multitude of health complications.
It truly is an emergency situation that unfortunately cannot be resolved quickly but must be addressed immediately.
We’re grateful for the opportunity despite what led to it.

Dolly was adopted from a shelter local to us just 6 years ago. The good folks at this shelter still have the records and a pic of a cute young starry-eyed beagle that looks nothing like Dolly does now. She was guessed at around 2 back then but could have been older. She’d come in as a stray. Age is always a guessing game for the abandoned.

6 years later, Dolly is back at the very same shelter. But this time, she was escorted by relatives of her owner, after her owner suddenly passed away. Nobody in the family was prepared to take her in.

It’s not a blame game. It’s just sad.

But there’s a rainbow to this story. A rainbow that connected us with the beautiful staff at this shelter.

I don’t think I could ever shine the spotlight on the unsung heroes of our animal shelters enough.
They are the first responders.
They witness the wreckage in real time.
And somehow, their hearts remain whole and fiercely determined. Their focus solely on trying to find a better future for these unwanted pets. How they do this day after day is a mystery to behold.
All I know is, this grateful rescuer is awfully glad they do.

Dolly launched a hunger strike as soon as she arrived at the shelter no matter how kind and caring the strangers surrounding her were. She couldn't help it. She was scared and confused and so very lost.

But there was that rainbow, don’t forget.

Dolly arrived at the shelter on Monday. I visited her on Thursday thanks to the beauty of compassionate collaboration between our animal shelters and our animal rescue groups. By Friday, we had Dolly’s foster home secured (Howl-Out to BOB Foster Mom Kathy who was ready to open her heart again after losing George Bayley in the fall) and an initial veterinary appointment scheduled for that afternoon.

Mission Dolly was underway.

After miraculously hoisting her into the beagle-mobile with bended knees and lots of grunting by yours truly, it was a short but interesting drive from shelter to vet clinic with Dolly attempting to do the driving but we got there safe and sound. Once there and sitting so pretty and patiently on the scale for us, we confirmed it…a whopping 28kg of pure Dolly.

That's close to 62lbs if you were trying to calculate the conversion.

By Friday night, a tired and restless Dolly was going back and forth between the fancy orthopaedic doggy bed we proudly presented her with and (no surprise) foster mom’s comfy couch…at least as soon as she kicked off all those pesky pillows.
Yet another proud member of the Pillow Haters Club is our sweet Dolly.

Medically, we have our work cut out for us. It’s a long road to recovery and comfort. First and foremost, we’ve got to chip away at the pounds. Slow and steady wins the race! (Another howl-out to foster mom in that regard)
But we’re also scheduled back for an 8-hour Low Dose Dex testing for Cushings…sigh. The dreaded condition might be playing a factor. She’s also got dental disease but no dental surgery until she loses some weight. Too risky otherwise.

And yes, there’s that wee “bauble” on her nose. It may be the elephant in the room you simply cannot help but notice but it’s really the least of her problems. It'll bid us farewell when she's fit for dental surgery. For now, it just adds to her character!

We think she’s BEAUTIFUL!

Don’t you agree?

Hello Dolly!
No questions about it.You're right where you belong …with us.

It’s funny the things we miss the most when we lose a beagle.

When it comes to Douglas pictured here, it has to do with Cheerios.

If one of his humans accidentally dropped a Cheerio on the floor at breakfast time, Super Dougie was there in a flash to remedy the problem!

It’s been 5 years since his passing but to this very day, every time a Cheerio hits the floor, they think of their precious self-appointed, One-Beagle-Cheerio-Cleanup-Crew and smile.

Here’s to Dougie and to his Forever Humans, Ann Marie & Lou, who joined our Family of Monthly BOBEFACTORS in his memory and in his honour 5 years ago.

Thank you for coming to the rescue of so many Cheerios over the years, Doug. ❤️

Prayers and positivity needed for Forever Foster, Freya.

She’s been coughing more lately so off we went to the vet this afternoon. A listen to her chest revealed some concerning crackling which might suggest her heart condition is worsening to the stage of heart failure.

Right now, as we post this, our big brave girl is undergoing chest X-rays and bloodwork in case we need to add a diuretic to her medication protocol.

There are cognitive changes as well which is to be expected at her age. We suspect she’s at least 15 but could be older. No matter her age, we love our Golden Girl. She is one of the sweetest dogs ever to show up at our door. Just look at that face. Always trying to please the humans no matter how hard it is to sit still.❤️
