Today, April 4th is Equal Pay Day in Canada.

Why does the Gender Pay Gap still exist?
Some factors include:

🔹 Motherhood earnings penalties: Although pay inequities affect women of all ages, the pay gap widens after having children.
🔹Systemic bias: Women of color, women with disabilities, and women of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community experience disproportionately wide earnings gaps.
🔹Part-time work: Women are more likely than men to work part-time, partially in order to manage their care responsibilities.
🔹Under-representation: Women are under-represented in high-paying jobs and industries relative to men.

While there are several pieces of pay equity and human rights legislation in place that apply to various jurisdictions in Canada, the pay gap remains.

WCM’s Equity Equation research report on the Canadian Finance Industry outlines a roadmap to increasing ED&I in organizations and closing the pay gap.

So, what can we do to “close the gap”?

🔹Pay Transparency
🔹Cultivate inclusive workspaces
🔹Educate and learn about systematic inequities
🔹Examine stigmatizing workplace policies

Pay transparency is a way that companies can help mitigate pay inequities within their organizations. This includes publicly disclosing salaries in job postings which is key for attracting and retaining talent.

WCM’s Job Board is free for all job-seekers and aims to connect top talent with employers that value ED&I. We have introduced a salary specification and we encourage all employers to disclose a salary range to not only attract the right talent but contribute to normalizing pay transparency in Canada.

The Canadian Women’s Foundation source listed below also outlines multiple studies and sources to help close the pay gap, including around the topic of pay transparency.

We all have a part to play in ensuring there’s equity for all-around pay. What are you doing to make a difference?
