Today we honour the Day of the African Child, a day rooted in courage and sacrifice. On June 16, 1976, thousands of students in Soweto marched against an unequal education system. Many were killed for demanding a right that should never have required protest: the right to learn.

SAEF in partnership with Ntethelelo Foundation, continues that call to equity through mentorship, safe‑space programming, and psychosocial support that helps the youth stay in school, build resilience, and shape their own futures.

Join us in advancing this work by supporting community‑driven programmes that protect and empower Africa’s youth.

Today we honour the Day of the African Child.

This year’s focus on WASH: Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, underscores a core development priority. Reliable WASH access is essential to children’s health, learning outcomes, safety, and long‑term wellbeing.

Across the continent, inadequate WASH systems continue to create preventable barriers: illness, missed school days, and environments that limit children’s ability to grow and thrive. Strengthening WASH access is not just service delivery, it is a rights‑based commitment to equity, dignity, and child protection.

The Day of the African Child also honours the young people who marched in Soweto on June 16, 1976, demanding the right to learn.

Fifty years later, the struggle for equitable access to education continues, shaped today by WASH inequities that still hold too many children back.

SAEF remains committed to advancing WASH access and ensuring every African child has the dignity, safety, and opportunity they deserve.

Every child deserves protection, dignity, and the freedom to grow in peace. This week, SAEF reaffirms its role in advancing equity, safeguarding children’s rights, and strengthening the systems that support every African child.

As we celebrated Africa Day on May 25, we continue to spotlight the African Union (AU) Theme of the Year: “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.” Access to clean water and safe sanitation is dignity, it’s health, and it’s opportunity for every community.
