CULTURESHOCK FESTIVAL
(TORONTO, ON) UrbanArts Community Arts Council is proud to present the 9th annual CultureShock Community Arts Festival. From August 21 – 23, 2013, this 3-day celebration will highlight the Weston-Mount Dennis neighbourhood and Toronto. With a schedule of youth arts programming that focuses on dance, visual arts, and unforgettable music performances, UrbanArts
is excited to prove that Toronto is a hotbed of talent. CultureShock Festival – All festival events are free and family-friendly. The highlight of the summer begins with a sneak preview at a sophisticated evening of poetry and art at the UrbanArts Poetry Night and SKETCH Art Exhibition. Partnering with SKETCH, an arts organization that engages street involved and homeless youth, this evening will feature unique artwork and captivating spoken word poetry from headliner, and 2010 World Slam Poetry Champion, Ian Keteku. Other talented artists blessing the mic at this event, and again on the mainstage, include David Delisca, Dynesti, Yusra Khogali, and Enuma. CultureShock officially begins with an exciting dance workshop on Wednesday August 21st with Toronto based hip-hop and dancehall dancer/choreographer Brandon “Bizzy” Owusu. This energetic workshop will be the first to ever take place in the BRAND NEW UrbanArts dance studio
The 2013 CultureShock Festival main event will take place Friday August 23rd in Little Avenue Memorial Park. Attendees will enjoy live art installations, face painting, caricatures, henna tattoos, and street performers while listening to some of Toronto’s hottest talent. This year’s festival is headlined by Hip-hop super duo, Perfeck Strangers. Established solo artists Dan-E-O and Promise have been performing together as Perfeck Strangers since 2010 when they released the track “Work To Do” featuring Drake. As solo artists, and as a group, they’ve collaborated with Monetll Jordan, Elzhi or Slum Village, Royce Da 5’9”, and more. Their latest video “Dreams” featuring Wordsworth, has been making a splash since its release June 2013. Other featured artsits sharing their talents include Bootcamp Dance Crew, Bizzy Dancers, Jaek DeLarge, Zino, Enuma, Ali Demour, and MANY MORE! The fun doesn’t end there, join us Saturday August 24th for an outdoor movie screening at Little Avenue Memorial Park from 8 – 10pm. Councillor Frances Nunziata, the Weston Village Residents' Association, Frontlines, and UrbanArts present Movie Night in Little Avenue Park. The evening will include performances, concession snacks, and a movie screening under the stars. The CultureShock Festival will feature an array of local musical talent, art exhibits, youth art activities, and FUN! The festival aims to profile the artistic community and to reflect UrbanArts’ ongoing commitment of engaging youth and community development through the arts.
