On this day, we honour and remember the life of Police Constable Darius Garda of the Toronto Police Service, 51 Division. Through his loss, Beyond the Blue was born.
When we lose someone to su***de, the pain lingers—unanswered questions, unspoken “I love yous,” and a grief that ripples far beyond one person’s suffering. Su***de loss impacts entire communities. It transcends generations.
For those left behind, meaning-making is an important part of grieving su***de loss. This is not closure. It is often shaped by deeply personal, unspoken feelings of longing, sadness, and often, unwarranted self-guilt. The self-guilt ruminates over “what did I miss?” or “I should have known.” Sometimes, it is knowing and trying to act, but discovering that systems were not equipped or in place to help.
In memory of Darius Garda, SOLACE was built. It was created to provide families impacted by su***de loss with a place to find community, support, and space to share their grief—because these families are never alone.
The Ontario Police Su***de Memorial will stand in remembrance of all police service members who have died because of the line of duty.
Today, we send our love to the Garda family, to Darius’ colleagues at 51 Division and across the Toronto Police Service, to his friends, and to our wider community.
May you rest peacefully. Thank you, Darius, for your service.
