The needs of caring for a family member or friend with often unfold in layers. Roles evolve as needs change over time. Recognizing and discussing the shifts can help those who are there to support move from assumptions to shared understanding.

One of the most supportive things to do is have proactive conversations before a crisis forces decisions. These can begin with questions such as, “What feels manageable (or unmanageable) for you right now?” or “Where do you feel unsure and need more information?”

Roles within a network do not have to be equal to be meaningful. One person may handle medical appointments, another may manage finances, while someone else becomes the emotional anchor. For those wanting to support, rather than saying, “Let me know how I can help,” it is often more supportive to offer options: preparing meals once a week, providing transportation, organizing medications, or providing company and respite through visits.

Stepping in does not mean taking over all responsibilities. It means noticing the weight someone is carrying and offering to hold a piece of it.

To brainstorm about what this may look like in your situation, please reach out to the LBDA Support Team by email at [email protected] or by leaving a message on the Lewy Line at 800-539-9767.
