Mixing Rock Records with Energy, Depth & Analog Vibes

With Brian Moncarz

Join Toronto-based producer, mixer and engineer Brian Moncarz for a live walkthrough of his rock mixing approach. Using a real-world session, Brian will demonstrate how he builds powerful, emotionally engaging mixes that retain the energy and feel of a live performance while working primarily in the box.

The presentation will focus on creating depth, punch and analog-inspired character using plugins, parallel processing and mix bus techniques. Attendees will get an inside look at Brian’s approach to drum, bass, guitar and vocal sounds, along with the workflows and creative decisions that help bring records to life.

Topics covered will include:

- Creating “live off the floor” energy in rock mixes
- Parallel compression and saturation techniques
- Building impactful drum and bass relationships
- Guitar layering and width
- Vocal processing and emotional impact
- Mix bus processing and analog-inspired tone shaping
- Maintaining feel and dynamics while achieving polished, impactful mixes

The session will conclude with an open Q+A where attendees can ask questions about mixing, workflow, production philosophy and the music industry.

The talk will span the discoveries of the early 20th century, the early energy revolution of the mid-20th century and some of the more recent developments of the early 21st century. Our speaker, John O’Keefe has been responsible for the acoustic design of many of Canada’s favourite performing arts venues. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of Toronto, a frequent guest lecturer at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and occasional lecturer at Sorbonne University, Dayananda Sagar Academy (India) and many others.
