Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign The international grandmothers solidarity movement amplifies African grandmothers’ voices Get engaged! Or take action today!

When the AIDS pandemic swept across the continent of Africa, it took the lives of nearly an entire generation – 35 million perished – which left their children alone and vulnerable. With little or no support, it was the grandmothers of Africa who stepped in to care for these children. The Stephen Lewis Foundation launched the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign in 2006, in response to the emergi

ng crisis faced by African grandmothers as they struggled to raise millions of children whose parents died from AIDS-related illnesses. Grandmothers and grandothers in Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States have rallied in response, creating a dynamic movement. They raise funds in their communities to support the life-enhancing programs run by African grandmothers and the community-based organizations who support them. The grandmothers movement amplifies the voices and expertise of African grandmothers, and shows the world that leadership by older women is critical in reclaiming hope and rebuilding resilience across communities. Everyone can be part of the growing, international grandmothers movement.

“The pandemic of HIV and AIDS feels as though it will go on forever,” Stephen Lewis shared in Race Against Time, his book based on his 2005 CBC Massey Lectures. “No one is untouched. Everyone has a heartbreaking story to tell.”

As we mourn the loss of Stephen Lewis, we also share our gratitude for how he has changed the world.

In the early days of the pandemic, as UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa, Stephen was confronted by the ravages of AIDS: overflowing medical wards, endless funerals and community after community with people — often young women — in the final throes of life.

Their stories deeply moved him. After seeing first-hand the efforts and expertise of grassroots organizations working to care for their decimated communities, Stephen co-founded, with his daughter Ilana Landsberg-Lewis, the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

To learn more about Stephen’s extraordinary career and share your condolences with Stephen’s family, we invite you to visit the Stephen Lewis Foundation website today:
