On Saturday August 22 at 2pm in the Momiji auditorium (3555 Kingston Road), Susan Yatabe will give a presentation on her mother Kazuko Shinobu and her father Eiji Yatabe.

Susan is an accomplished researcher on Japanese-Canadian history and has written on this subject for various Canadian publications. She also created a display at the Langham Museum in Kaslo BC about her mother's teaching career of Japanese-Canadian internee students which was shown in 2025.

Please RSVP your attendance to Jovel at [email protected] or 416-261-6683 ext 234. Light refreshments will be provided. We hope to see many people who are interested in Japanese-Canadian history and heritage.

How the Second World War Shaped My Parents’ Lives

Susan will recount the Second World War experiences of her Japanese Canadian parents, who were nisei born in Vancouver.

Kazuko Shinobu became a Grade 3 teacher while interned in in Kaslo, B.C. A rediscovered collection of her students’ artwork and photographs became the foundation of a 2025 museum exhibition in Kaslo. 83 years after the internment, Susan located thirteen of her mother’s former students (or their descendants) and documented their stories.

Eiji Yatabe was one of 148 Japanese Canadian men who enlisted in the Canadian army while their families were interned in prison camps and on sugarbeet farms across Canada. He and his brother Min were posted to Southeast Asia with the Canadian Intelligence Corps. They investigated Japanese war crimes against allied troops, including crimes related to the building of the Burma-Siam Railway.
