On this Day of Mourning, CUSW urges all Canadians to remember the fallen and to stand in solidarity with those still at risk. But remembrance alone is not enough. The most meaningful tribute we can offer is action: continued vigilance, stronger protections, and an unwavering commitment to ensuring that every worker returns home safely at the end of the day.

Because one death is too many. And zero is the only acceptable goal.

Day of Mourning. We Do Not Forget, We Act.

April 28 is a day to remember the workers who have been injured, lost, or affected by workplace incidents, and to recognize the toll on their families and communities.

In this episode, Dan is having a discussion with Rob Ellis, founder of My Safe Work, to share a story that reminds us why this day matters and why safety can never be overlooked.

We remember. We reflect. And we take action to make sure every worker gets home safe.

Built by skilled workers. Delivered for Ontario.

The Ontario Government recently announced that the Darlington Refurbishment Project has been completed ahead of schedule and under budget, a major achievement on one of the largest and most complex energy infrastructure projects in the world.

CUSW members played a key role in this success, delivering high-quality work that will provide clean, reliable power for decades, while supporting good jobs and apprenticeship opportunities moving forward.

CUSW Chairperson John Wabb was proud to represent our members and deliver remarks at the press conference announcing this milestone, speaking to the role skilled workers played in delivering safe, reliable, clean energy for Ontario.

From President Shawn Campbell: "This week, the first round of layoffs officially began at the Crofton pulp mill on Vancouver Island. Families are losing their paychecks, and workers are being forced to empty their lockers. Despite the critical role forestry plays in our economy, our Brothers and Sisters in the Public and Private Workers of Canada - PPWC are being met with federal delays and inadequate support."

Ontario Approves Pickering Nuclear Station Refurbishment — A Major Opportunity for Skilled Workers Across the Province!

The Government of Ontario has officially greenlit the refurbishment of the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station, a project that will create nearly 37,000 jobs and secure Ontario’s clean-energy future for decades to come.

CUSW welcomes this announcement. Our members are already working at Pickering today, and we are proud of the expertise, safety culture, and professionalism they bring to one of Ontario’s most important energy sites. This refurbishment ensures that even more skilled workers will have the opportunity to contribute to this historic clean-energy project.

In the words of CUSW Chairperson John Wabb:

“There are so many positive things to say about the announcement made today by Minister Lecce. This project provides needed outcomes that benefit the Canadian economy including jobs for Canadian Workers, opportunities for young Canadians to start Apprenticeships in the skilled trades, provide clean, affordable and reliable energy in communities across Ontario and produce cancer-fighting and life-saving isotopes for the health care sector across the globe. This is a winning project for every Canadian.”

This project reinforces what we already know: when governments invest in clean energy and infrastructure, they invest in people, skills, and stronger communities.

CUSW looks forward to supporting our members — present and future — as this work begins.
