Canada Day is not just a celebration of our past. It’s an opportunity to shape our future. As unions and working people, we reaffirm our commitment to a fairer, more inclusive Canada. We stand proud not just of our flag, but of the values it can represent: compassion, solidarity, and collective progress.

Last week, before Premier Ford's trip to Washington, CUSW members, including Chairperson John Wabb, had the opportunity to sit down with the Premier to share what skilled trades mean to major projects across Ontario.

Premier Ford's Fortress North America plan centres on investment in critical minerals, nuclear energy, advanced manufacturing, and infrastructure, the kinds of projects our members are proud to be part of every day. We were glad to bring that perspective to the conversation ahead of his trip.

Skilled tradespeople are a big part of what makes Ontario's economy strong. It means a lot to have that recognized at the highest levels.

Ontario just made history and our members were part of making it happen!

Bruce Power's Unit 3 reactor has returned to service seven months ahead of schedule and $150 million under budget, the most successful nuclear refurbishment completion in Ontario history.

CUSW members contributed their skills and expertise to this landmark project, which will now power over 800,000 Ontario homes with clean, reliable electricity for the next 35+ years.

This is what skilled trades in the power sector look like. Record-setting work, delivered safely, by the best workforce in the world.

This specialized course is designed to equip journeypersons with the skills to effectively mentor apprentices in real-world workplace settings, fostering both practical on-the-job training and professional development for well-rounded journeypersons of the future.

Last week, CUSW was proud to exhibit at the Skills Ontario Competition, one of the largest skilled trades events in the province. A big thank you to the members who represented us on the floor, connecting with hundreds of young people exploring their futures in the trades, sharing information about apprenticeship, and showing them what a career in the skilled trades can really look like. Events like this are exactly where the next generation of tradespeople gets inspired and we're glad to play a part in that.

On this Day of Mourning, CUSW urges all Canadians to remember the fallen and to stand in solidarity with those still at risk. But remembrance alone is not enough. The most meaningful tribute we can offer is action: continued vigilance, stronger protections, and an unwavering commitment to ensuring that every worker returns home safely at the end of the day.

Because one death is too many. And zero is the only acceptable goal.
