Dyslexia is an accurate term, and often the preferred one. It gives families a path forward to knowledge and community, shows educators what instruction and supports are needed, and connects everyone to decades of research on the condition and what is effective for those with dyslexia.

The different terms used for the same condition can create confusion, and can leave people without the support they need.

From the International Dyslexia Association's 2025 definition: "Dyslexia is a specific learning disability characterized by difficulties in word reading and/or spelling that involve accuracy, speed, or both and vary depending on the orthography. These difficulties occur along a continuum of severity and persist..."

Disability is a protected ground under Ontario's Human Rights Code.

The Ontario Human Rights Commission's Right to Read report called on the Ministry of Education and school boards to explicitly recognize the term dyslexia, and on teacher education to name and explain it. Using the word is part of realizing the right to read.

Today we recognize the children and adults across Ontario with dyslexia, and the families, educators and advocates standing with them.

There is hope, because so much is known. Decades of research tell us what dyslexia is, how to identify it early, and what instruction is effective.

Structured literacy puts that research into practice. With it, people with dyslexia learn to read and write well, and reading skills can be improved at any age.

The International Dyslexia Association is the oldest organization dedicated to the study and treatment of dyslexia, with roots going back to the 1920s. IDA Ontario has been part of that work for over 20 years.

So today, learn something new about dyslexia. Share it. Say the word.

If you have dyslexia, or you’ve advocated for a child who does, you know how much it matters to get the right support at the right time.

You may remember finally understanding why reading had always been so difficult, finding information that helped you advocate for what your child needed at school, or watching your child begin to believe in themselves once they received instruction that worked for them.

Those experiences are shared by so many of us in the IDA Ontario community.

This Dyslexia Awareness Month, we’re asking you to help us make sure that trusted information, resources, and support are there when you or someone in our community needs them.

Our goal is to raise $10,000 by October 31, while continuing to advocate for an education system where students with dyslexia get the support they need to succeed.
