While the term “microfinance” is well known and people have heard of it, many people do not know what is really microfinance. People have all sorts of ideas and misgivings. Individuals coming to microfinance from a financial or for-profit business background may have a different understanding and approach than people coming from development NGOs and the non-profit sector. Depending on where people come from, microfinance is defined and practised using different principles and sometimes opposing methodologies.
The answer to many of the questions require intensive studies and research and for which there are plenty of courses in institutes, colleges and universities. As most people may not have time to enrol in these courses Toronto International Microfinance Summit and Coady International Institute are jointly offering a one-day course which will be looking at various models of microfinance, its application internationally and the future. In addition to the international microfinance scene, this year, for the first time, we will also be examining financial exclusion and poverty in Canada.
The objective of this course is to introduce the participants to the basic fundamentals of microfinance and to enlighten them about the available paths. The course will give a brief introduction, the various terminologies, and the different approaches. It will introduce the basics and give a broader picture of the world of microfinance and its use as a tool for the fight against poverty.
