Known as the "Grandmother of Juneteenth," OPAL LEE is an American educator, counsellor, and civil rights activist. She spent decades advocating for Juneteenth to be recognized as a federal holiday.

In 2016, at age 89, Opal Lee began a symbolic walk from Fort Worth to Washington, D.C., to raise awareness for Juneteenth, helping build national support for the cause.

Opal Lee's efforts were instrumental in the passage of legislation that made Juneteenth a U.S. federal holiday in 2021.

In recognition of her contributions to civil rights and historical awareness, Opal Lee received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2024, the highest civilian honor in the United States.

In the past year at Red Door Family Shelter, the number of families served is up 26% and the number of individuals is up 18%. The number of meals served is up 9%. And the number of visits to our food bank increased by 11%.

We have also reduced the average length of stay in our shelter from seven months to 5.5 months. This achievement is the result of our Pathway to Housing program, the remarkable supports available to residents, and the generosity of donors who invest in programs that deliver real results—creating lasting change and transforming lives.

"I don't know what my life would be like now if I had not gone to the Red Door. They took care of us and kept me and my son safe. I felt love there. It was an important experience that set me on track for my new life. Thank you Red Door." —Former Resident
