This month we are shinning a Greenlight on Savage Society and their production of Salish Fire Keepers video celebrating cultural burning.
"Savage Society worked with the Salish Fire Keepers to produce an informative video that outlines the benefits of cultural burning to prevent wildfires and to care for the ecosystem.
The Salish Fire Keeper Society is a grassroots initiative that started in 2016 with the Nlaka’pamux, the Syilx, the Secwepemc and the St’at’imc Nations. They are a group of retired BC wild service firefighters, cultural burners and storytellers that use both prescribed burning and cultural burning to care for the trees and ecosystem as well as to honour the relationship between the trees, the animals and the water.
Savage Society has been building an ongoing relationship with the Salish Fire Keepers Society through participation in their annual gatherings, where we have brought artists to witness and learn about cultural burning and traditional land management practices.
This relationship informs our work and deepens our understanding of storytelling grounded in responsibility to tmixʷ. Through witnessing and story capturing we support the sharing of the Fire Keeper’s knowledge."
