"What inspired you to get involved with projects such as World Vision?"

"Last year, I signed up for a March Break Trip offered by my school. When you sign up, you’re put on a website and you get updates about your trip and other fun stuff you can do.
I got an email sent to me that said that the tour company was accepting applicants to become a Youth Ambassador with them. To apply, all you needed to do was create a video about an issue in your community that you’d like to change, and your ideas on how to change it. I thought to myself “Why not?” and applied. Unfortunately I didn’t get accepted, and I was pretty disappointed.
My older sister is a huge inspiration of mine, and told me to keep going, and that I wasn’t going to get accepted to everything I applied for, so I continued to apply to different organizations, and I eventually became a Youth Ambassador with World Vision. That’s really how I started with World Vision; I applied to something, didn’t get accepted, applied to more, and eventually got to where I wanted to be. From there, World Vision Youth has given me countless opportunities where I’m really able to do what I love and work with other amazing leaders, for example I just had an article published with them, talking about access to clean water.
I’m a firm believer that ‘everything happens for a reason’ because if I did get accepted to the first Youth Ambassador program I applied to, I don’t know where I’d be today, and I don’t know if I would’ve gotten the same amazing opportunities as I have so far." — Brianna Andrews, Rosedale Heights School of the Arts

"How do you plan on balancing the workload between your academics and extracurricular activities?"

"I would say the best way to approach to it is to work hard, stay motivated, keeping your end goal in mind, and, arguably the most important, always leaving enough time for yourself. There’s obviously not a one-size fits all, magic-bullet solution to managing your time properly, but I would argue that this is the closest you can get.

I, for one, try to place academics at the forefront of my focuses, but, concurrently, I’m always reflecting on the fact that these are quite possibly the years of my life where I’ll have the most freedom and have the most power to influence my future, so it’s worth the grind right now. It’s also really important to set goals and stay motivated in what you do; in other words, fall in love with your trade, or as one of those clichĂ©s my dad would say, fall in love with the process not the end goal. From advocating for student issues to programming or participating in a science fair, I’m proud to say that I love what I do.

In terms of time management, I think the key is staying consistent. We’ve all fallen victim to or, at least, witnessed the dreaded “do well at the start of the semester and then fall off for the rest” and I think that has to do with not maintaining the consistency nor the time off that you need to keep going. So, what’s the solution? I’d say leaving yourself with that time to really unwind, doing something you really enjoy. For me, that’s playing music and working out. It differs from person to person, but whatever it is, make time for it and keep doing it." -Rakeeb Hossain, TDSB SuperCouncil two-term Student Trustee, 2017-2019

As the former TDSB SuperCouncil Learning Centre 2 Grade 7/8 rep, Meghan Hendrickson shares some advice for incoming grade eight students

"If you're going into grade eight then you’re not just going into a new grade, but a new school year. That means you can decide to change things about the people around you or even yourself. You can make new friends with someone that you might not have talked to before. This year you can really figure out who you are. That's kind of what school is for; you can learn about yourself, learn what subjects interest you, etc.
My advice for incoming grade eight students is to get involved. Get involved in your school work, get involved with your friendships, get involved in clubs and activities inside and outside your school. Do your best in your school work, if you can go the extra step then do it. Get to know more people around you and get involved in their lives. Let people get involved in your life. Join clubs and activities that you find interesting and are things that you want to know more about and be involved in. The most important thing about school is to not just do your best, but also to be you and to find out who are. Be yourself because as you get older and grow as a person, you're going to find out that you're pretty extraordinary. Have a great school year and always know that you can be who you want to be" - Meghan Hendrickson, TDSB SuperCouncil Learning Centre 2 Secretary

"What was your favorite memory of high school?"

"Going into my last year of high school, its hard for me to pinpoint one moment that has stood out amongst the rest. I've experienced so much and changed in the same proportion the past couple years. My favourite memories were the times that I spent with my friends; just being together. For me, moments I've spent without dwelling upon negative thoughts and living in the present were 100 percent the most enjoyable. It might seem tacky, but I can honestly say that's what I will remember when I graduate." - Naba Khan, TDSB SuperCouncil Learning Centre 1 Secretary

"How has your involvement with youth leadership focused organizations, such as the TDSB SuperCouncil, enhanced your high school experience?"

"Being involved with Leadership organizations has really enriched my high school experience in multiple ways, as a middle schooler I never realized how many opportunities there were for me, until I discovered SuperCouncil through the help of my brother. Luckily I got involved early in grade 8, and it opened up lots of doors for me, helped me discover a new aspect to student life rather than just books and studying.
For my grade 9 year I decided to take some time off SuperCouncil to adjust to the transition to high school, and I can quite confidently say that was the biggest mistake I ever made. I realized that year, that the environment SuperCouncil puts you in, only helps you succeed and reach even greater heights and that removing myself from that situation was totally not worth it. However that year, I had joined my school's student council to stay involved but I very quickly realized that I wanted more, that I had a passion for student voice that stretched far beyond my school walls and because I had gotten involved early, I knew exactly where to go.
Fast forward three years, and now heading into my grade 12 year, I'm the President of one of the biggest student lead organizations in all of Canada as well as being part of multiple clubs and organizations in and outside of school. I can quite easily say that this Council as well as all other clubs and organizations I have joined and been a part of have truly changed my high school experience for the better, there are some opportunities I wish I had acted upon and some I wish hadn't taken, but overall through all these organizations I have become a better leader and more importantly a better person, and I'm looking forward to this year ahead, because there's lots in store already!" - Muneeb Chaudhri, TDSB SuperCouncil President
