On this Mission Sunday, we will do well to remember that having a mission is about pursuing life's deepest meaning. Today let us take time to give thanks for the particular mission to which we are called, both at this time in our lives as we look towards the future. Bearing in mind the wider context in which we live, let us also give our support and prayers to all who undertake to spread the good news of the gospel by word and action.

Feast of St. Marguerite d'Youville

St. Marguerite was a Canadian widow who founded the Sisters of Charity of Montreal, commonly known as the "Grey Nuns".

She was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1990, becoming the first native-born Canadian to be declared a saint.

“Loving God, help us to follow the example of St. Marguerite d’Youville. She was a compassionate person who helped the sick. Open our hearts to the needs of those who are sick at home, in hospitals, in hospice care, and in nursing homes. Amen”

October 15, is the Feast of Teresa of Avila, mystic, writer, and the first woman to be elevated as a doctor of the church. Her life and writings recognize the reality and struggle of spiritual dryness, as well as encouraging movement toward God.

POPE LEO FOR SURGERY TOMORROW (TUESDAY OCT/13/2026) ❣️🥀🍒🙏🙏🙏🙏
Pope Leo XIV will be admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital “late on Tuesday morning” where he will undergo surgery to remove a “small, localized lung nodule,” requiring changes to his scheduled events, according to Matteo Bruni, Director of the Holy See Press Office.

Responding to journalists’ questions about the Pope’s health on Monday, Mr. Bruni clarified that the examinations had been routine checks.

He confirmed that the Pope’s hospital stay following surgery is expected to last approximately one week.

The Pope will not take part in the afternoon session of the meeting in the Paul VI Hall marking the tenth anniversary of the publication of “Amoris laetitia.”

Pope Leo XIV has also asked Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization and new Dean of the College of Cardinals, to preside at the Mass on Wednesday, October 14, in St. Peter’s Square, with the meeting’s participants, including heads of Eastern Churches, Presidents of Bishops’ Conferences, married couples, and experts.

Happy Thanksgiving to all our Canadian friends.

Thanksgiving

I have been trying to read
the script cut in these hills
a language carved in the shimmer of stubble
and the solid lines of soil, spoken
in the thud of apples falling
and the rasp of corn stalks finally bare.

The pheasants shout it with a rusty creak
as they gather in the fallen grain,
the blackbirds sing it
over their shoulders in parting,
and gold leaf illuminates the manuscript
where it is written in the trees.

Transcribed onto my human tongue
I believe it might sound like a lullaby,
or the simplest grace at table.
Across the gathering stillness
simply this: "For all that we have received, dear God, make us truly grateful."
