💛🖤💜🤍Happy International Nonbinary People’s Day!

Today we celebrate gender as a beautiful spectrum, a sacred truth our Jewish ancestors understood. For thousands of years, Judaism has recognized gender diversity, with the Talmud acknowledging at least 6 gender categories.

Women of Holy Blossom would like to give a shoutout to Keshet and LGBTQ+ at the J for ensuring no one has to choose between their Jewish identity and their q***r identity.

How are you celebrating today? 🤔

This Wednesday, WHB celebrates Queen Salome Alexandra.

Salome Alexandra, Shelamzion in Hebrew, was the only regnant Queen of the Hasmonean dynasty. She ruled Judea in the Second Temple era, from 76 - 67 BCE. These 9 years were known as a golden age of peace and religious restoration.

Salome was married to 2 Hasmonean Kings. In accordance with Jewish law, when the first died without an heir she became the wife of his brother. On his deathbed, her second husband named her as his successor.

Salome was reputed to be a formidable and wise ruler. She maintained Judea’s independence, military strength, and secure borders. She avoided risky alliances and conflicts with neighbouring nations. And she demonstrated great skills in diplomacy. Judea flourished under her rule.

Unlike her second husband, Salome favoured the Pharisees over the Sadducees. She gradually removed the Sadducees from power and appointed her brother, Rabbi Shimon ben Shetach, a leading sage, as head of the Sanhedrin. Oral Law was reinstated and children received Torah education.

When Salome died in 67 BCE, her sons began a civil war. Roman intervention in Jewish life increased, ultimately with devastating consequences. Salome was the last sovereign to rule an independent and unified Judea.

Today we’re throwing it back over 100 years. On October 26, 1921, Rebecca Brickner, the Rabbi’s wife, invited the women of Holy Blossom Temple to a meeting, in order to discuss forming a sisterhood. The rest, of course, is herstory.

The festival of Shavuot, beginning tomorrow evening, is one of the Shalosh Regalim. It celebrates the giving and receiving of Torah at Mount Sinai. But this is a reframing of the holiday by Talmudic Rabbis. Shavuot began as an ancient agricultural festival that marked the end of the spring barley harvest and the beginning of the summer wheat harvest.

These 2 traditions—agricultural and giving of Torah—are combined in the story of Ruth, one of five Megillot in the K’tuvim portion of the Hebrew Bible. Ruth harvested the remnants of Boaz’s wheat fields to feed herself and Naomi. And Ruth, born a Moabite, joined the Israelites and accepted Torah. For these reasons, the Book of Ruth is traditionally read on Shavuot.

Ruth is today’s Jewish women crush wednesday. She is admired for her courage, faith and loyalty in pursuing a vision for her own destiny.
