What happens when an artist’s practice enters its next chapter?
For NEXT PRACTICE, FUSION is bringing together eight established clay and glass artists with curator Rachel Gotlieb for a year of sustained conversation, critique and exploration.
Rachel’s career has placed her at the centre of Canadian ceramics, design and contemporary art. She has served as Chief Curator of the Gardiner Museum, was the inaugural Ruth Rippon Curator of Ceramics at the Crocker Art Museum, and founded the Design Exchange’s curatorial program.
Her curatorial practice is matched by decades of research, writing and publishing on ceramics, design and material culture. Her books and scholarly publications have explored everything from functional ceramics and Victorian imagery to the enduring fascination with historic vessels and their meanings.
That depth of knowledge brings a distinctive perspective to NEXT PRACTICE; one grounded in looking closely, asking questions and understanding how an artist’s work fits within a larger cultural and historical conversation.
Over the course of a year, participants will have that critical perspective turned toward their own practices: an opportunity to question where the work is now, where it could go, and what might be possible next.
