In response to the Government of Canada’s announcement to direct the CRTC to review its recent decision, WGC Assistant Executive Director Neal McDougall said:

“The Government’s $600M funding announcement, while supportive of our sector, cannot be a substitute for a stable and enduring framework of obligations for foreign streaming services and broadcasters to invest in Canadian stories and creators in the market those services profit from. We must keep building on the foundational work done to date through the Online Streaming Act and its implementation.”

The WGC thanks the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) for its hard work leading up to the release of its latest decision on Canadian content.

“The decision is a significant step forward in the vitally important work of implementing the Online Streaming Act, and modernizing the Broadcasting Act,” said WGC Executive Director Victoria Shen. “Canadian cultural sovereignty matters now more than ever. A robust and equitable contribution framework from broadcasters and streamers is necessary to ensure a future for the screen industry in Canada, and this moves us closer to that goal.”

At the same time, the WGC is deeply concerned about the discontinuation of the policy supporting Canadian programming in the genres of drama, including children’s and youth programming and animation, and long-form documentaries.
