Safety in community spaces often comes down to preparation, awareness, and understanding.

This research highlight explores elopement in autism, including what it is, why it happens, and why it remains one of the most significant safety concerns many families navigate. Research shows that elopement often reflects a need rather than defiance, and understanding the reasons behind it can help families and communities respond more safely and effectively.

From public spaces to everyday routines, small, informed supports can make a meaningful difference in helping autistic children and youth participate more safely in their communities.
