It all starts in the greenhouse 🌱 Thanks to Elizabeth, our lead educator and program developer, the starter plants are ready to head into the gardens and kick off another season of growth! Her passion makes the space that is No.9 Gardens not only beautiful, but abundant. Thousands of pounds of organic food grown here are donated to food banks across Ontario—none of it possible without her care and vision.

With Mother’s Day around the corner, we’re especially grateful for the nurturing spirits like Elizabeth who help things grow—with patience, purpose, and so much heart.🌷💕

We love you mom! - Your kids, Rupert & Hanna

No.9 has successfully completed another Imagining My Sustainable Community program, this time in Toronto’s Danforth area. We extend our sincere thanks to newly trained educator Rebecca Minielly and her students for their outstanding work implementing the program. We were also fortunate to have the support of OAA member and architect Golshid Saham, Principal of MEGS Architects, who generously volunteered her time in the classroom to assist with model building.

Students explored underutilized lots near their school and proposed thoughtful, community-focused solutions that integrated the 9 pillars of sustainable design. Their projects emphasized affordable housing, green building practices, public transportation, and economic development—all essential components of low-carbon, inclusive communities.

Thank you to our valued sponsors , , , and the sustainability department for making this program possible! ⭐️

Earth day is a reminder - to be grateful for the land that feeds us, the air that fills us, and the moments of connection that ground us. So many of our most cherished memories begin with nature.

The greatest way to honor the earth is to live in a way that nurtures it in return.

Last week No.9 in partnership with Focus Forward for Indigenous Youth delivered a furniture workshop to seven youth from the Tyendinaga community.

Interns learned how to draw and model in scale to represent their ideas for new custom benches and classroom furniture for the new language and cultural centre being created by TTO. Later this year the students will work with a mentor carpenter to build out benches that will provide the seating for the new cultural space.

It was exciting to see new design ideas that include traditional Indigenous knowledge, teachings and symbols. At the end of the five day workshop the interns presented their furniture ideas friends and family.

TTO is actively engaging the community in the design of the project so that this new building provides skill building opportunities for local youth. It was great to facilitate this workshop with such talented individuals!

In 2019 No.9 administered its Imagining My Sustainable Community workshop to high school students in Tyendinaga in the hopes of launching a community designed building that would provide the space for a new language and cultural centre.

Yesterday we got to tour the building that came out of our workshop with the current interns that are participating in our furniture design workshop.

TTO, who is the organization heading up this project wants as much of the ideas for the centre to come from the youth of the community. We are working in partnership with Focus Forward for Indigenous Youth to see the furnishing is designed and built by these talented individuals from the community. Stay tuned for more examples of building a future of sustainable communities! ✨🏗️💡

On earth day this year No.9 was one of three NGO’s across the Americas to win a substantial grant totaling $1 million dollars from HCLTech.

With the support of the Americas Climate Action Grant, No.9 has started the process of training teachers across Ontario on how to deliver a workshop on designing a sustainable master plan to their students. No.9’s Teach the Teachers Program would like to thank HCLTech for their generous support.
