George Segal stars in this funny and poignant comedy that follows four New York Jewish intellectuals and childhood friends as they navigate the streets of Brooklyn in a red Volkswagen on a journey to find the location of a friend’s funeral. TFS is excited to be co-presenting FREE COUNTRY, A TRIBUTE TO ROB REINER at this year’s Toronto Jewish Film Festival!

TJFF presents a rare opportunity to see the late Rob Reiner’s delightful and rarely-shown 1978 sitcom Free Country, a passion project he made right after All In the Family. Reiner stars as an 89-year-old Lithuanian-Jewish immigrant, recalling his younger self—also played by Reiner—on the Lower East Side at the turn of the last century.

On Sunday, May 10, make it a Mother’s Day outing at the movies at Toronto's Paradise theatre with a musical double feature starting with Gold Diggers of 1933, the ultimate backstage crowd-pleaser followed by Lili, a tender, charming story set around a travelling carnival from 1953.

Gold Diggers, a pioneering Pre-Code film, was one of the first in America to use alternate footage of particularly risquĂŠ scenes allowing Warner Bros to distribute the film to regions with stricter censorship rules without sacrificing the story.

Despite these films being two decades apart, they both tell the story of young women who find themselves financially vulnerable, only to find love and a new life through the world of entertainment . A perfect way to spend tomorrow afternoon!
