(Thursday 14th September) For this weeks , we have a quote from Dr. Laverne Jacobs:

"We need to pay attention and understand the challenges faced by those who experience not only disability, but also a range of social identities and circumstances".

Laverne was the recipient of the 2022 Hummingbird award by DAWN Canada and
is a Law professor at the University of Windsor whose classes, research, and practice cover disability rights law, administrative law, human rights law and administrative justice. This January, Laverne began her commitment to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (She was the first Canadian ever to be selected!).

It’s Webinar Wednesday!

Today's webinar topic is Gender-Based Violence (GBV) from the perspective of Black and Indigenous Women. It is important to discuss Gender-Based Violence (GBV) as it applies to Black and Indigenous women because they experience unique barriers to support and forms of violence. In our training module, we discuss the factors the increase violence for Black and Indigenous women, the forms of violence they face, and safety planning considerations that accurately address their needs.

Attend one of our upcoming webinars (check the link in our bio) to help you or your organization provide better support and responses to these women when they disclose experiences of abuse. For inquiries or to schedule a webinar please contact our program coordinator Melissa.

For , we're sharing how you can make sure your social media content is visible to everyone by making sure you're using contrasting colours!

Often times, if there is not enough contrast in a post, it is hard for those with different visual abilities to see it. For example, if you use white text over a lighter background or background colour, it can be difficult to read whats on your post, even if it looks good to you. To check whether your post has a high enough contrast, check out the link below!

September 11th, while usually known as 9/11, is also the National Day of Service. This day recognizes the spirit of volunteerism in Canada, as seen most recently during the pandemic but specifically after the actions of 9/11. Today is about remembering the events that took place on 9/11, and honouring the actions of those who continue to step up when things are difficult by doing some good deeds of our own.

Here are some ideas of what you can do to celebrate National Day of Service: (1) Help out at a food bank, (2) Share stories and resources about volunteering and how to help, (3) Make some donations (food, clothes, books, toys) (4) Sign up to be a volunteer or a mentor at the Scarborough Women's Centre - SWC (check out the link in our bio, which takes you to their website where you can sign up!)

For this weeks , we have a quote from Pratima Gurung:

“Empowering [Indigenous women with disabilities] means that we must be at the table making decisions about the issues that affect us.”

Source : https://www.unwomen.org/en/news/stories/2017/4/from-where-i-stand-pratima-gurung

Pratima is a disability and Indigenous activist in Nepal. According to the UN, she is one of the "most prominent" voices in Asia regarding Indigenous women with disabilities. Pratima focuses on the intersectionality of of issues, as she is an Indigenous woman with a disability herself, she lost her hand in an accident when she was young, and works to empower and educate through her activism.

September 5th is Spinal Cord Injury Day.

What is something important to understand about spinal cord injuries? They do not look a certain way- they vary is severity. Besides paralysis, which tends to be more visible, individuals who have a spinal cord injury may find they experience respiratory complications, cardiovascular complications, pain syndromes, and bone fractures, among other symptoms.

This goes to show that disabilities can be invisible, and it's important to not make assumptions about an individual. Follow us for more accessibility tips and don't forget to like, comment, and share this post with your friends to help us expand our reach!

Have questions? Check out the links in the description of the post or comment on it and we'll get back to you as soon as we can!

(September 1st, Friday) September is Alzheimer’s awareness month, so for todays , we're sharing self care related to exercising your brain!

Your brain is a muscle, and it's important to take care of it! Ask yourself: what have I done to challenge my brain this week?
Different ways to exercise your brain: (1) Test your memory: try memorizing a list or a set of numbers and see if you can remember it in an hour. If an hour is difficult, try 30 or 15 minutes later, and try working up to an hour, (2) Instead of using a calculator, try doing (simple) math in your head, (3) When you’re eating, try identifying each flavour or spice in your meal!

Don't forget to follow us for more self-care ideas and to like, share, and comment if you see anything you like or have self-care tips/ideas of your own! Scarborough Women's Centre - SWC
