Call For Actors & Indigenous Writers for Hamilton Cold Reads: Neechie Edish

Building on the success of our sold-out 2025 premiere, Hamilton Cold Reads: Neechie Edish is a showcase for new and in-progress scripts - Indigenous Style!

Writers submit a short script a maximum of 15 minutes - plays, film scenes, TV scripts, sketches, or a series of character based poems. Actors are cast on the spot just before the event! All selected pieces will be read aloud by the actors in front of a live audience, giving writers the chance to hear their work brought to life while receiving valuable real-time feedback.

Whether you're an Indigenous Canadian writer, an actor (of any background), or an eager audience member, Hamilton Cold Reads: Neechie Edish gives you an inspiring space to meet likeminded people and share new ideas from Indigenous artists in and around town.

Applications close July 8. It is FREE to apply at HFTco.ca

"Being a visual artist has really contributed to my writing practice as well. I’ve learned (and continue to learn) to be patient, to trust the process, and to just give it a try, even if I know it won’t be perfect. I’m getting better at not being defeated when I feel resistance. I might need to take a day or a week to understand what feels crunchy. My visual art used to be the central focus of my artistic practice, but writing has sort of taken over in a symbiotic way. When I’m feeling stuck I switch to cross stitching or painting and let my brain work through the problem while my hands are busy and sure enough after a while I’m ready to switch back to writing." - Sy Wolf

June is a meaningful month in Canada 🍁 β€” a time to honour, reflect, and celebrate so many important matters.

Today, we're acknowledging the significance of June being the launch of Pride Season! πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

Pride season is a time to celebrate joy, resilience, and the power of 2SLGBTQI+ communities β€” and theatre has always been at the heart of that story. From the stage to the page, q***r artists have shaped culture, challenged norms, and opened hearts around the world!

If you're looking for an impactful way to engage this Pride season and beyond, consider checking out and supporting the work featured in the curated collection of plays by incredible LGBTQI2S playwrights on the Canadian Play Outlet!
