Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honour Residential School Survivors, their families and communities, and remember the children who never came home.

We pause to acknowledge the painful and ongoing legacy of Canada’s residential school system and its lasting impact on First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples. We also recognize the strength, resilience, cultures, languages, stories and contributions of Indigenous Peoples across Canada.

Truth and reconciliation calls on all of us to listen, learn, reflect and take meaningful action not only today, but throughout the year.

As an organization representing Canadian songwriters and music creators, we encourage our community to seek out and support Indigenous artists, songwriters and creators, and to make space for Indigenous voices and stories.

Meaningful ways to learn and engage:

Learn from Survivors and Indigenous voices:
Explore the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation’s 2026 programming and educational resources.

Learn about Orange Shirt Day:
Learn more about the history and significance of Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Take part in Truth and Reconciliation Week:
Explore programming and learning opportunities from the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund.

Listen to Indigenous music:
Discover music by Indigenous Canadian artists through S.A.C.’s Indigenous Music Spotify playlist and beyond.

Connect with your community
Find 2026 gatherings, ceremonies, educational programs and cultural events taking place across Canada.

Reconciliation is not a single day or a single action. It is an ongoing journey that asks each of us to keep listening, keep learning and keep moving forward.

“Music creators are not anti-technology. On the contrary, they operate on the leading edge of technological change, embracing new tools to enhance human creativity and workflow. However these technological changes cannot come at the expense of, or be developed on the backs of human creators, without authorization, remuneration or transparency. We applaud GEMA and the recent German court decision which reinforces and upholds the basic principle that human creativity and copyright must be respected. “

Arun Chaturvedi, President of Songwriters Association of Canada
