We were honoured to participate in a meaningful dialogue with Randeep S. Sarai, Secretary of State for International Development, and Rechie Valdez, Minister of Women and Gender Equality, who met with members of Toronto’s Filipino community.

The conversation highlighted Canada’s international assistance to the Philippines and recognized the important contributions of Filipino-Canadian nonprofit and community organizations in strengthening partnerships, supporting development initiatives, and building stronger ties between Canada and the Philippines.

Community representatives present included Nora Angeles (Chair, Adhika), Erna Opena (Board Member, Adhika), and JB Ramos (Board Member of Adhika and the Philippine Chamber of Commerce - Toronto). Other members of the Filipino community were also able to participate virtually, including Veronica Javier (Filipino Canadian Civic Action Network), Monica Bustos (Kapisanan Philippine Centre for Arts & Culture), Kim Garcia (Bayan Toronto), Richmond Uy (Kabangka Canada ), and Allos Abis (Pinay Collection).

We appreciate the opportunity to engage in this important dialogue and look forward to continued collaboration that supports the Filipino-Canadian community and advances shared priorities between Canada and the Philippines.

January 2026. Scarborough.
Cold outside. Warm circle inside.

Kapisanan facilitated a Tongtongan between Kabenguetan Dance Troupe and Folklorico Filipino Canada.

Tongtongan is a Cordilleran practice of coming together in council — rooted in Indigenous governance, dialogue, and collective decision-making. It reminds us that culture isn’t just what we perform. It’s how we relate.

We sat in circle and spoke about lineage, responsibility, and what it means to carry our dance traditions onto Turtle Island. There was honesty. Katkatawa/laughter. Care.

Pagyamanan mi/maraming salamat to all the culture bearers and artists from Kabenguetan Dance Troupe and Folklorico Filipino Canada for your vulnerability, courage, and openness to teach and learn, and just...be!

If any of you know of any kapwa groups who may benefit from a day of tongtongan, pls connect with your kuya'te's over here at the K! Either drop us a msg ([email protected]) or dito in the dm's.

This past Saturday, Kapisanan and Café Khela gathered with our friends at to make parols — Filipino Christmas lanterns popular in the archipelago.

Yesterday, they shared that after 10 years, they’re saying paalam to Cambio & Co. and Sinta & Co.💛

As we reflect on our time together, we’re reminded of their guiding intention: to create ecosystems, not empires.

For a decade, Cambio & Co. uplifted Filipinx makers and artisans, ensuring that our stories were held with care and that community—not profit—was always centered. Their work helped so many diaspora Filipinos see themselves reflected with pride, and the ripple effects of the ecosystem they've created will continue for generations to come.

We’re honoured that one of their final community gatherings was spent with us, making parols that will now carry a deeper meaning. These lanterns shine not just with light but with everything Cambio and Sinta have taught our community about sustainability and solidarity. ✨

Maraming salamat, and . Thank you for the ecosystems you cultivated, the makers you championed, and the seeds of kapwa you nurtured. Your legacy lives in every story, and every artist you helped shine. You are more than just another business. You're a principle. A template. A way of being.

Padayon. 🌟

If you’ve ever loved or learned from Cambio & Co. and/or Sinta & Co., now is a beautiful time to send them love in the comments and support the makers they’ve uplifted over the years. 💛

🪃 Salamat for moving with us!

Our 2-hour arnis workshop at Wildseed Centre for Art & Activism was 🔥

Together, we:
• Learned the foundations of arnis, a traditional Filipino martial art
• Moved through drills that centred timing, flow, and awareness
• Connected self-defence to community care, boundaries, and collective safety

For many of us, it was a first intro to arnis. For others, it was a return to something familiar. For all of us, it was a reminder that our bodies carry history, skill, and power.

Huge thank you to our instructor, Senior Master JB Ramos, our hosts at , and to everyone who showed up, tried something new, and held space for each other. 💫

Kapisanan is rebuilding and expanding our community programming — workshops like this are only possible because of the generosity of our community. If you’d like to support more movement, culture, and arts-based gatherings, please consider donating to Kapisanan at kapisanancentre.com/donate. Every contribution helps us grow this work. ❤️

Let us know in the comments if you’d like more arnis, martial arts, or movement sessions! ✨
