🔬Curiosity 🤝Opportunity

🧪One participant said she didn’t think a career in STEM was possible, but after participating in BIG on STEM last year, she realized it was within reach!

She wasn’t alone in that thought.

In 2025, 242 youth from across Canada took part in BIG on STEM - a program created by Big Brothers Big Sisters in partnership with Cenovus to connect young people with careers in science, technology, engineering, skilled trades, and math.

The outcome speaks for itself:
🚀 2 in 3 participants said their interest in pursuing a STEM career increased overall
🔬 98% found it to be a positive and worthwhile experience
🌟 98% felt inspired to explore more educational and career opportunities in STEM

🩺Discover What’s Possible

Building Canada’s future workforce starts with showing young people what’s possible. BIG on STEM is a program that’s doing exactly that.

Created by Big Brothers Big Sisters and powered by a partnership with Cenovus, BIG on STEM connects youth with hands-on experiences and mentorship from real professionals working in engineering, sciences, the skilled trades, and math -helping them explore career pathways they never knew were available

Here’s what happened in 2025:
🔬 242 youth participated across Canada
🧲 97% of participants felt more supported in exploring STEM education and career pathways.
✨ 98% felt inspired to explore more STEM opportunities

One participant summed it up by saying, "I didn’t know STEM could look like this. I want to learn more.” And that’s what Making Life Bigger looks like.

✨For a lot of young people, STEM or the skilled trades feels like it’s meant for someone else.

BIG on STEM exists to change that.

Celebrating a Life of Service: In Memory of David Pickersgill

David Pickersgill first joined the mentoring movement through his local Big Brothers Big Sisters of Calgary and Area agency in Alberta, in 1994. His passion for the well-being of children in general, and his connection to mentoring blossomed over more than three decades.

When he retired from the corporate world of manufacturing and construction, it was to do, what he called, ‘volunteer kids stuff’ with several organizations. He became involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada in 1999 and supported the movement at both the local agency and the National board because it aligned with his passion for helping kids who had been, in his opinion, ‘short-changed’.

Our deepest sympathies and gratitude to David’s family for sharing him with our cause.

Célébrer une vie consacrée aux autres : à la mémoire de David Pickersgill

David Pickersgill s’est joint au mouvement du mentorat en 1994 par l’entremise de son organisme local Grands Frères Grandes Sœurs à Calgary, en Alberta. Sa passion pour le bien-être des enfants et son attachement au mentorat n’ont cessé de grandir pendant plus de trois décennies.

Lorsqu’il a pris sa retraite du milieu des affaires, après une carrière dans les secteurs de la fabrication et de la construction, David a choisi de se consacrer auprès de plusieurs organismes à ce qu’il appelait affectueusement « du bénévolat auprès des jeunes ». Il s’est engagé auprès de Grands Frères Grandes Sœurs du Canada en 1999 et a soutenu le mouvement tant à l’échelle locale qu’au sein du Conseil d’administration national, puisque sa mission correspondait à son désir profond d’aider les jeunes qui, selon lui, n’avaient pas eu les mêmes chances que les autres.

Nous adressons nos plus sincères condoléances à la famille de David et lui exprimons notre profonde gratitude de nous avoir permis de bénéficier de son immense engagement envers notre cause.
