The Shoebox Project / Opération boîte à chaussures

The Shoebox Project / Opération boîte à chaussures The Shoebox Project for Women collects and distributes gift-filled shoeboxes to women impacted by homelessness.

The Shoebox Project for Women collects & distributes gift-filled Shoeboxes to women experiencing or at risk of homelessness and other financial hardship in Canada. Shoebox gifts are valued at approximately $50 and include a mixture of basic essentials and little luxuries that any woman might enjoy. Our goal is to spread kindness and compassion and to let women know that they are valued and respected by their community. The Shoebox Project’s success is contingent on the hard work of our network of hundreds of volunteers and its continued growth would not be possible without the generosity of individual and corporate donors.

This Thanksgiving, we’re taking a moment to reflect on what we’re grateful for, especially the incredible community that continues to stand behind The Shoebox Project.

We’re extremely grateful for every volunteer who gives their time, every donor who gives what they can, every partner who helps us reach women in their communities, and every person who chooses kindness and connection.

At the same time, we recognize that Thanksgiving carries a complicated and painful history. For many Indigenous Peoples, the story of Thanksgiving cannot be separated from the impacts of colonization, the displacement of Indigenous communities from their lands, and generations of harm caused by colonial systems. We believe acknowledging this history is an important part of moving toward truth, understanding, and reconciliation.

We also recognize that Thanksgiving itself isn’t easy for everyone. It can bring joy and connection, but it can also bring grief, loneliness, family challenges, or difficult memories. However you’re experiencing this day, we hope you give yourself permission to honour what you’re feeling.

Today, we’re grateful for community, while making space for reflection, learning, and the many different experiences that this day can hold.

Warm wishes to you all this Thanksgiving.

Today is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

It is important to honour the children who never returned home, survivors of residential schools, and the families and communities who continue to carry the impacts of this history.

Truth and reconciliation asks us to listen, learn, reflect, and take meaningful action. As an organization committed to creating communities rooted in diversity, compassion, and belonging, we recognize that this work is ongoing and takes time.

We encourage our community to take time today to learn from Indigenous voices, reflect on the history and ongoing impacts of residential schools, and consider how we can each contribute to reconciliation.

We recently came together for our Annual General Meeting, and while it’s an important moment to reflect on the work we’ve accomplished, it’s also a chance to celebrate the people who make that work possible.

We want to take a moment to say a huge thank you to Shannon Murree, Tracee Smith, and Danielle Anisef for their dedicated service on our board over the years. Thank you for sharing your time, experience, ideas, and care with The Shoebox Project. Your contributions have helped shape our organization and strengthen the work we do for women across Canada.

We’re also so happy to welcome Kate Shingler to our board of directors! We’re grateful to have you join this incredible group of people who care deeply about our mission and the communities we serve.

To Shannon, Tracee, Danielle, and Kate, thank you for being part of this journey. We look forward to what the next few years bring!

90% of families using emergency shelters are headed by single women.

Behind this statistic are women doing everything they can to create stability, safety, and a better future for themselves and their families.

At The Shoebox Project, we believe no woman should have to face challenging circumstances of feeling unseen or alone. Through community support, meaningful acts of kindness through our shoeboxes, and essential resources, we work to remind women that they matter and that their communities care.

Together, we can help create moments of dignity, connection, and hope for women when they need it most.
