Thanks to those who came to this morning’s rally to save hybrid work! Looks like we ended a little early as OPSEU OPS Unified team headed into the hearing. To be honest, I lost all sense of time as my hands and feet froze!

Do you miss hybrid work?
You need to be here on Friday morning!

OPSEU OPS Unified has filed an application at the OLRB (Ontario Labour Relations Board) against the implementation of the 5-day RTO Directive during bargaining of our Collective Agreement: all new policies are required to be “frozen” while bargaining is ongoing. OPSEU’s case is being heard at 505 University on Friday morning! Let’s rally outside and show our solidarity for hybrid work! Be there and be loud!

Share this post! And if you can’t be here, why not suggest some sign slogans in the comments!

Local 527 at the 2025 OPSEU/SEFPO Broader Public Sector Conference

Local 527 played a strong role at this year’s BPS Conference.

Vice-President Kim Farrell attended as the delegate for Sector 18 (Mental Health and Addictions), representing our members at the Canadian Mental Health Association – Ontario Division (CMHA–ON).

Our elected Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal (WSIAT) delegate for Sector 20 (General – Casinos and Racetracks), Shivaun Hoad, was unfortunately unable to attend, so Local President Thor Martin stepped in as the alternate delegate on behalf of Local 527.

We’re pleased to share some major news:

🔹 Kim Farrell was elected Bargaining Coordinator for Sector 18, strengthening the voice of members across the sector. CMHA–ON is currently in the midst of bargaining, so her experience will benefit not only her own bargaining unit but also support stronger outcomes across Sector 18 as a whole.

🔹 Thor Martin was elected Vice-Chair of the inaugural Division Executive for Sector 20, helping shape the sector’s direction going forward. The creation of the DivEx has been years in the making and represents an exciting opportunity to better support the diverse collection of bargaining units within this division. Special credit goes to Sector Chair Nigel Edwards, President of Local 565 (Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario), whose efforts have been instrumental in moving this work forward.

Congratulations to both Kim and Thor. Their leadership ensures Local 527 continues to be a strong and active presence across the broader public sector.

Today, OPSEU OPS members and their managers were blindsided by the announcement about the return to a 5 days per week in-office standard. This is bad news for a lot of reasons for so many of us. How do we stand up against it?

1. Fill out your OPS Bargaining Team demand set survey. Indicate that you prioritize remote work and want to see this protected.

2. Keep up to date with your OPS Unified Bargaining Team via and the Table Talk newsletters (https://opseu.org/sector/ontario-public-service-unified). Get engaged and stay involved!

3. Talk to your OPSEU colleagues, make sure they are registered to an OPSEU local, encourage them to fill out the survey and stay updated with OPS Unified and your OPSEU local.

4. Tell your MPP why remote work options make sense. Doug Ford says, “everyone needs to go back to work.” This is extremely insulting and incorrect: we have been hard at work this entire time!

Solidarity in Action! 🤝💪✊

Local 527 proudly stands with striking OCEU/CUPE Local 1750 members at the WSIB. We’re showing our ongoing support with a donation to their strike fund. Their members have been on strike for two weeks now, with the employer effectively locking them out while failing to return to the bargaining table in good faith.

The WSIB is currently funded at 118%. Instead of investing these surplus funds to improve services and better support injured workers, the Board is handing billions back to businesses – all while eliminating dozens of Canadian jobs to outsource the work to US-based Iron Mountain.

This fight is about putting injured workers and the services they rely on ahead of corporate interests. It’s about protecting good union jobs, safeguarding the integrity of public compensation services, and standing up to employers who continue to prioritise corporate profits over injured workers and frontline staff.

We stand in full solidarity with OCEU/CUPE 1750. ✊

📢 Send a letter to the WSIB Board of Directors demanding they agree to minimum staffing levels so injured workers get the help they need: https://cupe.ca/wsib

Workers represented by OCEU/CUPE Local 1750, are now on strike due to WSIB management’s continued refusal to engage in meaningful negotiations.

Join their rally on Thursday, May 22 at noon in front of the WSIB offices at 200 Front St W.

Fair contracts aren’t optional—they are essential. OPSEU/SEFPO Local 527 stands with you in your fight.
