We’re celebrating our final Youth Category shortlist title for the 2025 SWCC Book Awards 📚 🏆 !

The Gland Factory: A Tour of Your Body’s Goops, Juices, and Hormones by Rachel Poliquin, illustrated by Clayton Hanmer, and published by Greystone Kids, is an entertaining and informative book that takes readers on a behind-the-scenes tour of the human body. Through humour, fascinating science, and playful illustrations, The Gland Factory introduces young readers to the endocrine and exocrine systems, revealing how glands help maintain balance by regulating everything from growth and digestion to sleep and body temperature.

Author Rachel Poliquin is known for bringing the wonders of the natural world to life for young readers, while illustrator Clayton Hanmer’s artwork transforms complex scientific concepts into an engaging and unforgettable visual adventure.

We’re celebrating our next youth category shortlist title for the 2025 SWCC Book Awards 📚 🏆!

Dad, Is It Time to Gather Mint? Celebrating the Seasons by Tyna Legault Taylor, illustrated by Michelle Dao, and published by HighWater Press, is an engaging read-aloud story that follows Joshua as he learns about the rhythms of the seasons while spending time on the land with his family in Animbiigoo Zaagi’igan Anishinaabek (Lake Nipigon First Nation).

Through observations of nature, readers discover when it is finally time to gather mint, while also encountering Omushkegomowin (Swampy Cree) and Anishinaabemowin (Ojibwe) words woven throughout the story.

Congratulations to Roz MacLean, her children's book Together, a Forest: Drawing Connections Between Nature's Diversity and Our Own published by has been shortlisted for the 2025 SWCC Book Awards 📚 🏆 in the Youth Category!

In this beautifully illustrated picture book, a class trip to a nearby forest becomes an exploration of belonging, diversity, and connection. Award-winning Canadian illustrator and children's author Roz MacLean is passionate about education, inclusion, and the arts. Through Together, a Forest, MacLean invites young readers to reflect on how disability, neurodivergence, and diverse ways of experiencing the world enrich our communities, just as biodiversity strengthens a forest.

Congratulations to professional research astronomer 🔭 Marcin Sawicki, whose book Webb’s Cosmos published by Firefly Books has been shortlisted for the 2025 SWCC Book Awards 📚 🏆 ! A professional research astronomer, Sawicki has been involved with the James Webb Space Telescope project for more than two decades and is now extensively using Webb to explore the universe. He is the co-author of 20 research papers based on Webb data and has played a key role in helping translate cutting-edge discoveries for both scientific and public audiences.

Meltdown: The Making and Breaking of a Field Scientist by Sarah Boon, published by the UAlbertaPress is recognized as one of the three finalists in the General category. Through a deeply personal exploration of science, identity, and resilience, Meltdown offers a compelling look at her life in her field adventures in snow and ice, and the human side of scientific discovery. Her story blends adventure and academia as she traverses John Evans Glacier on Ellesmere Island, builds weather stations in northern British Columbia, samples proglacial rivers, and scares away grizzlies with helicopters.

Meet our last 2025 SWCC Book Awards 📚 Youth Award Judge: Jana Levison!

Jana Levison is a professional engineer 🏗️ and professor at the University of Guelph whose research focuses on groundwater resources 💧 and the impacts of agriculture and climate change on water quality and quantity.

A leader in engineering research and education, Jana is also the inaugural Doody Family Chair for Women in Engineering. When she’s not working, she enjoys reading books 📚 with her two children.

We’re excited to have her join the 2025 SWCC Book Awards judging panel.
