🪶 June 1st marks the start of National Indigenous History Month!

Throughout this month, we recognize and celebrate the strength, knowledge, cultures, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.

We sincerely thank the communities and Indigenous partners who continue to guide and support this work through their knowledge, collaboration, and lived experiences. We honor the importance of protecting and celebrating Indigenous traditions, cultural practices, and ways of knowing for generations to come. 🌿

A special thank you to contributors from past photo contests for sharing powerful images of Northern life, culture, and connection to the land and ice. Credits to: Jen Kikpak, Tobi Tookome, Moses Amoagoalik, Susan Bourgaise, Jessica MB, Mallory Ehaloak, and Molly Oyukuluk.

As a part of the Yukon Fish Community of Practice speaker series, students from F.H. Collins Secondary School got the chance to step into leadership roles and shape the future of salmon stewardship in the Yukon.

Through The Gordon Foundation treaty simulation program, students in F.H.’s Indigenous Academy explored how Kwanlin Dün First Nation created an innovative youth-focused initiative that is centred on salmon stewardship, leadership, and governance.

The simulation gave students a chance to take part in treaty negotiations, learn about decision-making and see how different groups work together to manage fisheries. They explored cultural, political and environmental perspectives, and learned why collaboration is key to protecting salmon.

The F.H. Collins Indigenous Academy is a full-day, one semester program that provides Grade 10 students with an opportunity to learn experientially through Indigenous ways of knowing and doing.

We took a day last month to pause, connect as a team, and reflect on how we show up for our community partners.

Here are Jessie Hale (Sector Development Lead), Joanne Weedmark (Consensus Granting Lead), and Lisa Milosavljevic (Communications).

We’re still accepting interest for an open spot on our team as an Administrative Coordinator. We’d love to hear from you → annauma.ca//our-story

A big thank you to Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami for hosting Tapiriit, which celebrated the best of Inuit culture, cuisine, and community at the National Arts Centre.

It was great to see so many people from across the North in Ottawa, with a highlight being the wonderful Beatrice Deer Band.

We had a fantastic time in Whitehorse last week hosting a classroom Treaty Simulation with F.H. Collins Secondary School. Students learned many skills required for treaty negotiation, including teamwork, public speaking, and research.

A big thank you to the advisors and teachers that helped this event go well. It’s fantastic to see young people take an interest in Modern Treaties and knowledge transfer between generations.
