the8fest

the8fest the8fest is a Toronto-based film festival that supports all forms of small-gauge film. Our first annual festival was held in February 2008.

The8fest is a festival for anyone using small-gauge to create rough little gems on film. A unique Toronto-based film festival that presents all forms of small-gauge film: 8mm, Super 8 and 9.5mm, as well as works in installation, loops, personal, handmade, experimental, animations, diaries, essays, collage, cut-ups, performance/film, music/film and 'proto-cinema devices' like zoetropes. The8fest pr

esents films from Toronto, across Canada and from small-gauge creators and communities around the world. Showcasing the 70+ year history of small-gauge film – from artists' work in the form since the 1950's and 60's, to its wider cultural use in home movies, instructional loops and beyond - the8fest provides a forum for filmmakers who want to show their work on small-gauge and for people who want to see this work in its original formats. The8fest is committed to keeping the exhibition of small-gauge film a viable presentation medium.

Not to be missed!
the8fest is pleased to present the final day of in-person events with three special programmes at:
Beaver Hall
29 McCaul St, Toronto, ON M5T 1V7

🔶 3:00PM
Perspectives, Observations, and Vignettes (POVs): Judy Blankenship, John Coburn, and Barbara Sternberg

Curated by Robin Riad and Rennie Taylor

Places, Observations & Vignettes (POVs), shows three distinct voices from a professional artist to a documentary photographer and an experimental filmmaker. Spanning from the early 1970s to the late 1990s, these Super 8 films have never been publicly viewed in their entirety until now.

🔶 6:30PM
Small Notes on Small Gestures (Tetsuya Maruyama and Nikolas Candido) -

Presented by Tetsuya Maruyama in person!

In a world where Grand Gestures (with a capital G), such as going into space, are celebrated in Grand Media, can a small gesture like collecting insect corpses serve as a point of displacement? This selection of films, made by artist-cineastes (with small a-c) from various corners of Brazil, provides fragmented time-space to celebrate small in-situ gestures.

🔶8:00PM
Home Movie History Projects Presents: From Cape Town to Scarborough

A large extended family gathers for outings in and around Cape Town in the late-1960s - early 1970s. The life of the Liliefeldt family, both before and after immigrating to Toronto, is captured in the home movies they shot.

Co-Presented by Toronto Q***r Film Festival+ Sponsored by Canadian Filmmakers Distribution Centre (CFMDC)

Curated by Robin Riad and Cayley James

Post-screening conversation between Wrik Mead and the8fest's Chair and co-curator Robin Riad

Emerging from Toronto’s experimental film scene of the 1980s, Wrik Mead’s films have been internationally celebrated. Working across film, video, installation and print, the goal of this program is to explore a very specific small-gauge corner of his filmmaking practice.

Kyle Whitehead's IMMANENT UNION
(2021, Canada, Super 8, B+W & Colour, 58 minutes, Generative Sound via Light-Controlled Synthesizers)

🔵 8:30pm

Places, Observations and Vignettes (POVs)
Curated by Robin Riad and Rennie Taylor

Sunday, July 30th, 3:00pm
Beaver Hall
29 McCaul St, Toronto, ON M5T 1V7

Places, Observations & Vignettes (POVs), shows three distinct voices from a professional artist to a documentary photographer and an experimental filmmaker. Spanning from the early 1970s to the late 1990s, these Super 8 films have never been publicly viewed in their entirety until now. Themes of time, cycles and destruction, portended or literal, are evident in these films. Artist John Coburn’s New York City takes us on a journey through the iconic city with curious eyes and whose sharp attention and deep affection of Manhattan would later help define his career. Documentary photographer and writer Judy Blankenship’s critical lens of the devastation of downtown Batavia, New York, has echoes to present conservation concerns, particularly in Toronto. Experimental filmmaker Barbara Sternberg’s passage through the elements takes the universal subject of water, fire and air and transforms them into poetic visions of place. POVs bring old work into new contexts, highlighting the point of views of visions within Super 8.

The program includes:
John Coburn’s New York City, Parts 1 & 2 (1980) – 25 minutes

Judy Blankenship’s Destruction of Buildings in Batavia, New York (1973-74) – 30 minutes

Barbara Sternberg’s Elemental (1990s) – 15 minutes

Film still credit:
