Are you curious about fostering? June is foster awareness month, and we want to give a big shout out to all of the amazing fosters (and foster fails) out there, working quietly behind the scenes to get our amazing cats and dogs adopted, taking them to their vet appointments, and giving them a safe space to land while they are between homes.
Fostering is super rewarding, and by opening your heart and home to an animal, you're literally saving lives by making space in the shelter.
How does it work?
After an application, interview, and screening process, you work with a coordinator to find a suitable furry match. You then share the responsibility with EHS. Here's a breakdown:
You are responsible for:
- Providing love, food, water, stimulation through play, and a safe space
- Administering medicine (if applicable)
- Getting your kitty to their appointments
- Keeping their litter box clean
- Working with them on any behavioural issues, if applicable (e.g. reactivity, skittishness, socializing kittens, etc.). EHS offers extensive support to guide you
- Keeping your coordinator informed about your foster's progress, well-being, and health
- Answering questions from coordinators, speaking with potential adopters, and when the time comes preparing your foster for their new furrever home
EHS is responsible for:
- All costs associated with caring for your foster (food, medicine, medical care, treats, litter, toys, etc.)
- Making decisions about treatment and care of the foster
- Final decisions re. adoptions, though you may be asked for input about potential adopters
Shared responsibilities:
- Marketing your kitty (providing information about their personality, pictures, videos, and other content our teams can use to showcase your foster)
- Working on any behavioural issues. In some instances we provide training and ongoing support
You get to enjoy the love of a pet without any of the financial or decision-making obligations. It's truly a WIN-WIN situation.
