The Virtual Secondary Alternative Schools Fair, taking place on November 9, 2022, will introduce families to the Alternative schools in the board that offer Grade 9 to 12 programming. Alternative schools are highly engaged, smaller school environments. They use non-traditional hands-on approaches to learning. Each school has a distinct identity and focus, such as democratic education, holistic learning, physical art, mindful living, entrepreneurship, social justice, community outreach, and more. These schools are ideal for students seeking an alternative to mainstream education and who want to take an active role in their own learning.

Here’s an update on secondary schools from the April 25 meeting of TDSB’s Alternative Schools Community Advisory Committee (ASCAC).

There will be fewer teachers in Alt Secondary schools for 2022-23 as the TDSB’s projected enrolment is down (the lowest in years) and enrolment is the primary driver of teacher allocations (though not the only one). This is despite the increase in the supplementary teacher allocation (which will be increased to 17 in 2022-23 from 9 in 2021-22).
TDSB staff indicated the primary reason for reduced Alt Secondary enrolment during the pandemic has been fewer new students coming to these schools, and not because current students are dropping out.
Principals of Alt Secondary schools are actively working to reengage with students who stopped attending school during the pandemic.
TDSB Trustees Laskin, MacLean and Pilkey attended this meeting.
The minutes for this ASCAC meeting will be posted at the link below.

At the Finance, Budget, and Enrolment Committee (FBEC) meeting on March 3, TDSB staff recommended a “supplement” of 17 teachers for secondary alt schools for program viability for 2022-23, compared to the 6.5 supplement they had recommended last year (which was then increased to 9 after advocacy by students, parents, and teachers). While the supplement of 17 teachers is higher than last year, it is not yet clear whether the total number of alt secondary teachers will be the same, or lower than 2021-22. We will post again once we know this. (We do know that TDSB is projecting that secondary school enrolment will be lower in 2022-2023.)
