Yakup Kadri Karaosmanoğlu was one of the most renowned figures of modern Turkish literature, known for his powerful portrayals of Turkish society during the late Ottoman period and the early years of the Turkish Republic. Educated in Cairo, İzmir, and Istanbul, he was not only a novelist, but also a journalist, translator, diplomat, and member of parliament whose works closely reflected the social and political transformations of 20th-century Türkiye.
His landmark novel Stepmother Earth (Yaban), first published in 1932, is set during the years of the Turkish War of Independence and remains one of the most influential novels in Turkish literature.
Through the story of Ahmet Celâl, a former officer who moves from Istanbul to an Anatolian village, the novel explores themes of alienation, belonging, nationalism, and the psychological distance between urban intellectuals and rural Anatolia during a period of profound national transformation.
Yaban continues to stand as a powerful reflection on identity, nation-building, and the changing realities of Turkish society.
