Community Catalyst: Pathways to Progress

This afternoon we spent time at The Gathering exploring solutions without boundaries. Here’s some of what we heard from Community Ambassadors:

✅ We need to step away from reactive care and prioritize prevention because that is what saves lives and creates wellbeing

✅ We need truly affordable housing that creates a place for community members needing social connection but also access to wrap-around care

✅ Mental health needs to be integrated into wrap-around supports through community hubs that create entry points to care for everyone

✅ The impacts of food security are systemic - with food we are able to be more productive and have more stable employment, our kids are able to excel in school, we are connected to our culture, and we can all play our role to contribute to the wellness of the community

✅ We can’t assume people don’t want to be well - they often just don’t have what they need to be able to access it…like food, housing, employment, warm clothes, safe spaces for their families - all the things that need to be addressed before they can think about anything else

Health Commons has partnered with Peel Public Health to integrate equity into routine immunization programs, policies, and strategies in Peel Region, for children 0-16. The energy was FLOWING at The Gathering as we came together through co-design to share ideas about what’s working, what’s not, and what better looks like.

A key part of today’s gathering is to encourage and make space for being together, but also caring for self as Community Ambassadors. Their work is hard and it can impact their wellbeing. Art therapy was an important part of today’s time together, and it was great to see the room come alive through creativity. And to see relationships form and strengthen through a shared experience of art and connection.

This morning our incredible colleague Nour Al-Nasser shared space with Community Ambassadors to talk about compassion fatigue. community Ambassadors do heart work and hard work, and it can impact wellbeing if people don’t have the mechanisms in place to care for themselves ❤️

To start us off, Paul Williams from the Carefirst Seniors & Community Services Association Board shared about the healthcare model he’s observed in Japan - core to this model is that people achieve wellness within the heart of their community, through diverse service providers (both within and outside of typical care spaces, for example garbage collectors and convenience store operators) who are trained to care for everyone in the community as peers - connecting each other to the hyper local things they need to be well.

This is a reminder of the powerful role that Community Ambassadors play at the heart of the health system, acting as an entry point for people to access the hyper local things they need to be well here in Ontario.

🤩 We’ve started our second Community Ambassador Gathering, where we are celebrating the roles, contributions, wisdom, and achievements of Community Ambassadors from across Ontario through the High Priority Communities Strategy!

We started in ceremony, through a beautiful and grounding Land Acknowledgement and Opening Song to honour and give thanks to the traditional territory we are gathered on, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, Anishnabeg, Chippewa, Haudenosaunee, and Wendat peoples - and to bring us into relationship with each other as community.

Chi-Miigwetch, big thanks to Carefirst Seniors & Community Services Association for being exceptional hosts!! ❤️❤️❤️

🌟 Embracing the vibes! 🌟

We were joined by Dancing with Parkinson's Canada for our Community Ambassadors open session this week to share focused services and offerings for people living with Parkinson's disease and seniors out of isolation. The discussion delved into supporting community members living with the condition to discover joy in their movement through dance and art.🙌🤝💪

Vibes🤩

The Neighbours team at the Lab is working closely with the Dixon Hall Community Advisory Group to understand what wellness means to seniors in Downtown East. Last week, the team spent time visualizing what that journey to wellness looks like and what might feel challenging when trying to partake in activities that make one feel well. 🙌🤝
