Community Fundraiser for Disaster Relief: A United Effort!

Our nation recently endured one of the most devastating natural disasters in its history, leaving many in need of urgent support. In response, the local community came together for a special fundraising event held on Sunday, December 14th at the Royal King Event Centre in Toronto. The purpose of this gathering was to raise essential funds for ongoing relief efforts and to aid those most affected by the tragedy.

In a truly inspiring display of generosity, every available band and DJ in town offered their talents free of charge for the event. Their performances added vibrancy and unity to the evening, underscoring the power of music to heal and bring people together.

Among the distinguished performers, our advisor Mr. Gamini Hemalal and his band Ceymphony played on stage at no cost, demonstrating their commitment to the cause. We are proud to highlight that young Thurstanite Dineth Gunarathna joined the band, volunteering his musical abilities to support the fundraiser.

Our President, Mr. Channa Perera, exemplified true leadership by personally sponsoring the venue costs through Thurstan OBU Canada. This remarkable gesture not only provided a space for community gathering but also showcased the spirit and commitment of Thurstanites in supporting those in need.

Tickets for the event were sold exclusively via Eventsly.ca, an innovative online ticketing platform recently created by our Secretary, Mr. Niran Akalanka Perera, and two partners. In a further act of generosity, Mr. Perera and his team absorbed all ticketing costs, ensuring that every dollar raised went directly to disaster relief efforts.

Thurstan OBU Canada actively supported this event. Several of its members contributed by purchasing tickets. Key leaders including President Mr. Channa Perera, Vice President Mr. Sarath Kumasinghe, Secretary Mr. Niran Akalanka Perera, and Advisor Mr. Gamini Hemalal was present at the fundraiser, further highlighting the unity and leadership within our organization.

Thurstan OBU Canada was also the sole OBU in Toronto to participate in this noble cause directly.

This event stands as a testament to the generosity, solidarity, and unwavering spirit of our community. We extend heartfelt gratitude to all performers, organizers, volunteers, and attendees who made this fundraiser possible. Together, we have demonstrated that even in the face of immense hardship, compassion and unity can light the way forward.

Thurstan College OBU Canada Annual Fundraiser 2025

β€œSing A Long with a Knight” – A Night of Music and Community

Thurstan College OBU Canada hosted its annual fundraiser in a refreshing and engaging format this year. The event, titled β€œSing A Long with a Knight,” was held at The Base Bar and Restaurant in Scarborough. This fundraiser attracted over a hundred enthusiastic participants from the Thurstan community and beyond.

A special highlight of the evening was the live music provided by Ceymphony, the band led by our advisor, Mr. Gamini Hemalal, which included young Thurstanite Dineth Gunaratne.

Demonstrating his commitment to the cause, Mr. Hemalal generously volunteered his band’s performance at no cost, creating a vibrant and enjoyable atmosphere for all attendees.
The event was made even more memorable by the active involvement of volunteers, including several talented singers from our own community. Among them was our vice president, Mr. Sarath Kumarasinghe, who took the stage and delighted the audience with his performance.

With more than a hundred participants, the fundraiser was a resounding success in both turnout and engagement. The funds raised will support ongoing projects and initiatives benefiting Thurstan College and its wider community.

Thurstan College OBU Canada extends sincere gratitude to Mr. Gamini Hemalal and Ceymphony for their outstanding contribution, the volunteers who made the event possible, and all attendees for their support. Together, we look forward to many more successful events in the future.

Thurstan OBU Canada retained the Channa- Ajith Trophy by defeating their archrivals Isipathana OBA Canada on Canada day at Maple Leaf Cricket grounds in King City.

This Battle of the Brothers game was a part of the cricket festival organized by the St Thomas OBA Canada. Thurstan led by Dulitha Wickramasinghe, the man from the French city scored 225 runs batting first. This was possible largely due to a great knock by Sri Lanka youth and former Canadian player Shian Kamleen. He went on to score 108 runs and it was the first century of this series. He was well supported by Vimukthi Nupearachchi which helped Thurstan to pile up over 200 runs which was a record for this series. Chasing 226 to win, Isipathana ended up with a score of 175 giving Thurstanites a comfortable 50 run win.

Shalinda Nanayakkara was the star of Isipathana as he took off his keeping gloves to come out to roll his arm. Eventually it became one of the best decisions of Isipathana captain Dhushi Kethees as Shalinda produced the best bowling performance for them. Not only that but also, he went on to score a quick 38 runs for Isipathana. When he was at the stumps it looked all possible that Isipathana could walk away with a win.

Umesh Karunarathne thought otherwise and put the brakes on the Isipathna line by capturing four wickets. Former schoolboy cricketer of the year and another Sri Lanka youth cap used all his experience to shatter isipathana hopes which were short lived. Both sides dropped a few easy catches but Hansaka Gamage of Thurstan held on to a great one to get rid of the Isipathana opener Umar which was the catch of the match. Mr. Padmalal De Zoysa, a senior Thurtanite living in Canada was the chief guest of the match and Isipathana old boy Kumar Rajendra was the guest of honor. Distribution of trophies was as follows,

Winner – Thurstan OBU Canada

Player of the match Thurstan - Shihan Kamleen

Player of the Match Isipathan - Shalinda Nanayakkara

Best Batsman – Shihan Kamaleen

Best Bowler – Umesh Karunarathne

Best Fielder – Hansaka Gamage
