Closure Statement – Alsaha

إلى أصدقاء الساحة، وأعضائها، وكل من شارك يوماً في هذا الفضاء،
تأسست الساحة عام 2018 كمبادرة مجتمعية هدفت، في بدايتها، إلى أن تكون مساحة لقاء للسوريين في كندا، ثم اتسعت لتشمل الناطقين باللغة العربية من القادمين الجدد. وقد قامت هذه المبادرة على فكرة بسيطة مفادها إتاحة فضاء إنساني آمن للتواصل، والتعارف، وتبادل التجارب، بعيداً عن الاستقطاب والتوتر.
في مسار التأسيس، اختارت الساحة أن تكون فضاءً غير سياسي، انطلاقاً من قناعة مفادها أن المجتمعات الخارجة من النزاعات تحتاج أحياناً إلى مساحات تواصل خالية من الاصطفاف والخطاب السياسي المباشر. غير أن التجربة أظهرت، مع مرور الوقت، أن هذا الخيار — في سياق سوري مثقل بالجراح والانقسامات — قد فُهِم من قبل بعض أفراد المجتمع على أنه موقف سياسي بحد ذاته، أو على أنه انحياز غير مقصود.
نود أن نؤكد بوضوح أن هذا الفهم لم يكن يوماً هدف الساحة، ولا يعكس نوايا القائمين عليها أو القيم التي قامت من أجلها. ومع ذلك، فإننا ندرك اليوم أن هذا الخيار قد تسبّب، دون قصد، في شعور بعض الأفراد بالإقصاء أو بعدم التمثيل. ومن هذا المنطلق، نتقدّم باعتذارنا الصادق لكل من شعر بأن الساحة لم تكن المساحة التي تلبي تطلعاته أو احتياجاته.
وبناءً على ذلك، وفي ظل جملة من المتغيرات، يأتي هذا القرار اليوم متقاطعاً مع ظروف تتعلّق بمسارات حياة الأفراد المؤسسين وانتقالهم إلى مراحل جديدة، إلى جانب تحوّلات أوسع ترتبط بسوريا الجديدة، وما يواجهه المجتمع السوري من تحديات متجددة، وتصدعات وتشظيات اجتماعية وسياسية برزت خلال الأشهر الأخيرة، وتعمّقت خلال العام المنصرم.
إن هذه التحولات المركّبة تفرض أسئلة جديدة حول أشكال العمل المجتمعي، وحدوده، وأدواته، وقدرته على الاستجابة الفعلية للواقع الراهن.
بناءً عليه، نعلن اليوم إغلاق منظمة الساحة، بعد مسار امتد لعدة سنوات، حمل في طياته محاولات جادة، وإسهامات متواضعة، إلى جانب إخفاقات نتحمّل مسؤوليتها. ونغلق هذا الفصل بتقدير عميق لكل من دعم هذه المبادرة، أو شارك فيها، أو انتقدها، أو تفاعل معها بأي شكل من الأشكال.
نأمل أن تسهم هذه التجربة في فتح المجال أمام مبادرات مجتمعية أكثر قدرة على مقاربة التعقيد، وأكثر جرأة في بناء الجسور، ورأب الصدوع داخل المجتمع السوري، وضمن المجتمع العربي الأوسع في كندا.
كانت الساحة محاولة صادقة،
والمحاولات الصادقة، وإن لم تكتمل، تبقى جزءاً من مسار التعلّم الجماعي.

Closure Statement – Alsaha
To the friends of Alsaha, its members, and everyone who has ever participated in this space,
Alsaha was founded in 2018 as a community initiative that initially aimed to serve as a meeting space for Syrians in Canada. Over time, it grew to include Arabic-speaking newcomers more broadly. The initiative was built on a simple idea: to create a safe and humane space for connection, dialogue, and the exchange of experiences—away from polarization and tension.
From the outset, Alsaha chose to be a non-political space, rooted in the belief that communities emerging from conflict sometimes need areas of interaction free from alignment and overt political discourse. However, experience has shown that in a Syrian context, heavy with wounds and divisions, this choice was at times interpreted by some as a political stance in itself—or as an unintended form of bias.
We want to clearly state that such interpretations were never the aim of Alsaha and do not reflect the intentions of its founders nor the values upon which it was built. Nevertheless, we acknowledge that this choice may have, unintentionally, led some individuals to feel excluded or unrepresented. In light of this, we extend our sincere apologies to anyone who felt that Alsaha did not meet their hopes or needs.
This decision to close comes amid various developments—personal transitions in the lives of the founding members, as well as broader shifts linked to the ongoing Syrian journey and the renewed challenges facing the Syrian community. Recent months have brought deeper social and political fractures, and the past year has further exposed the strain within and beyond our community.
These complex changes raise new questions about the forms, limits, and tools of community work—and about its ability to respond meaningfully to the realities of the present moment.
Accordingly, we are announcing today the closure of Alsaha, concluding a journey that spanned several years and carried within it earnest efforts, modest contributions, and shortcomings for which we take full responsibility. We close this chapter with deep appreciation for everyone who supported this initiative, participated in it, challenged it, or engaged with it in any form.
We hope this experience will help make space for new community initiatives—ones that are better equipped to grapple with complexity, and bolder in building bridges and mending divides within the Syrian community and the broader Arab community in Canada.
Alsaha was a sincere attempt,
And sincere attempts—even if incomplete—remain part of our collective learning journey.
