Shields Prize: What have you enjoyed about your time with the Prize?

It has been a true pleasure being a part of an incredibly hard-working team that is so devoted to uplifting women and non-binary writers. I’m grateful to be able to learn from how Alex, Emily, and Natália approach their work with care and generosity.

Shields Prize: What stayed with you from the events?
The convivial, warm atmosphere at both our public reading and the prize ceremony cemented for me the importance of literary community. Reading and writing are not necessarily solitary endeavours—they connect people in incredibly meaningful ways.

Shields Prize: What is something you’ve learnt that you are taking with you as a professional?
Clear communication goes a long way, especially on a small team where everyone is somewhat involved in everything. I am also learning that working with books in any capacity inevitably means moving boxes of books from one place to another, on and on, forever.

The Shields Prize Foundation was created because we saw the need to support women and non-binary writers in the literary world.

We set out to make a change and we are proud to say we are doing it.

We need your support to continue our work: donate through June 30 and double the impact of your tax-deductible donation!

It gave us immense joy that authors from the United States and Canada who have been longlisted, shortlisted, or won the Shields Prize in previous years came to our 2026 ceremony to honor the 2026 cohort.

We strive to create a literary community where all feel welcome and celebrated.

The Prize is about economic support, yes, but also about creating connections, offering opportunities for exchanges about writerly life – and ultimately creating uplifting literary friendships and long-term writerly relationships.

Donations made through June 30 will be matched by Board Directors Kimberley Goode, Barbara Moses, and Karen Prentice, and by the TAWANI Foundation. Tax-deductible as allowed by each country.

“This harrowing yet captivating novel fills us simultaneously with horror and compassion.

Set in a dystopian Kolkata battered by poverty, starvation and severe climate change, it drags readers from complacency and forces them to face what can happen to our values when our dearest ones are stalked by disaster.

Through trenchant images, deft character creation, and breathtaking plot-twists, Majumdar embroils us in the lives of Ma and Boomba until we are no longer sure who is the guardian and who the thief.”

— 2026 Carol Shields Prize for Fiction jury citation for A Guardian and a Thief by Megha Majumdar ( )

Snapshots from 2025 Shields Prize Winner Canisia Lubrin’s stay at Fogo Island Inn.

Here’s what Canisia had to say:

“To be born and raised on an island is to be aware that so much of life depends on small things, that the finitude of the island does not itself foreclose the profound.

My time on Fogo Island was this extraordinary reminder that the best of what it means to be human is to insist on the audacity to transform small things into livable conditions big enough to share.

Zita Cobb and her mighty small crew have dreamed something remarkable into being through this very process.

I left thinking that Fogo Island is such a place where the hope of a humane world seems, without cynicism, still alive.

To be there was, in a word, revitalizing, and in no small part due to the magical Fogo Island Inn and the Shields Prize.”

The Carol Shields Shields Prize for Fiction is deeply thankful to Fogo Island Inn for their generous donation of a 5-day stay to our winners.

Who will be the next to visit Fogo Island?

The 2026 Shields Prize Winner will be revealed on June 2.
