The Jean Augustine Center for Young Women's Empowerment (JAC) was launched in 2014 to empower girls and young women. Under the leadership of Patron-Founder Jean Augustine, the Centre offers a range of empowerment programs free-of-charge to young girls ages 7-17 years old. Our service focuses on:

- education;

- nutrit

ion;

- mindfulness;

- life skills

- real-world job training. Hailed as a trailblazer, Jean Augustine is a single mother who became the first ever African-Canadian woman elected to Canada's Parliament in 1993. She served with distinction and was responsible for laws making Black History Month official; and the Famous Five statues -- the first-ever of Canadian women erected on Parliament Hill. A life-long volunteer, she received the Order of Canada for her work and continued dedication to improving outcomes for youth, single mothers and newcomers. With continued support and kind donations from community individuals and others, the JAC will continue striving to help develop healthy, empowered and educated young ladies. This is a win for community, for Canada and for the world.

to the Next Chapter Conference! 🎓

Last month, the Jean Augustine Centre hosted 30+ young women from various high schools across South Etobicoke for a two-day post-secondary readiness conference.

Led by facilitators Coach AJ and Kimora Lee, participants completed workshops and activities designed to prepare them for their post-secondary journeys, including post-secondary applications, scholarships, as well as transferable skills like self-advocacy and communication.

What an incredible evening. 💫

This past Saturday, the Jean Augustine Centre welcomed more than 350 guests, including community leaders and politicians, to our inaugural Gala Fundraiser at the Luxe Convention Centre.

Among the highlights included:
🎤️ Fabulous performances by Ngoma Drum & Dance, Roots and Branches, Mee Young, and Jully Black.
🖼 A stellar live auction, featuring prizes like a three night stay at a Jamaican villa, a signed painting of the Hon. Dr. Augustine, and more.
🎶 Live music by Quincy Bullen, Giselle Bishop, and DJ Mel Boogie.
💬 Inspiring remarks by Minister Charmaine Williams, Senator Paulette Senior, Lieutenant Governor Edith Dumont, Dr. Rhonda McEwen, and more!

Thank you to our volunteers, staff, board members, community partners and sponsors for all your hard work behind the scenes to make this event possible.

A warm thank you to the Ontario Trillium Foundation for awarding the Jean Augustine Centre a $14,200 Seed Grant and a $107,800 Grow Grant. 🙌💜

The Seed Grant will support our new 'Only One You' program designed to help young women navigate stress, identity, relationships, and the pressures of growing up in a complex world.

Meanwhile, the Grow Grant will strengthen our 'Youth Visionaries' program by expanding leadership opportunities and providing training in leadership skills, emotional resilience, and social bonds.

Please join us in welcoming Mee Young to the stage as she honours us with the national anthem at our upcoming Her Future Forward gala.

At just 15 years old, this rising star is already making her mark a vocal student at Father John Redmond School of Arts, gospel choir member, and cast member of Mean Girls the musical.

Most recently, she performed at Meridian Hall alongside the University of Toronto Faculty of Music.

We are proud to have her share her gift with us at our gala
