EHM is an inner-city mission of the Presbyterian Church in Canada that cares for poor, homeless and socially isolated people through housing, services and advocacy. ehm provides supports for people who are homeless or who are living in unstable housing. We offer an Adult Drop In Centre with hot meals everyday, after-school programming for youth, financial planning and trusteeship, a free dental clinic, support and referrals for people living with mental health and/or addictions. We provide stable, clean, supportive housing to 110 individuals and families.

In 2021, after three years apart, the borders finally opened. The paperwork started moving again.

And one day, Amanda and little Horacio walked through the door.

"I don't have a word big enough for that moment. It was like something that had been missing clicked back into place."

EHM couldn't close the distance while Horacio waited. But they made sure he didn’t disappear inside it.

175 people call EHM home right now. Each one has their own wait, their own routine, their own reasons to hope.

Horacio thought his family would be reunited soon after he arrived in Canada.

Then the pandemic hit.

"Borders closed. Government offices shut down. Paperwork stopped. I didn't know when I would see my family again."

For three years, Horacio didn't know when he'd hold his wife and son again.

But because of Evangel Hall Mission, he didn't have to carry that weight alone.

"Every morning, there were neighbours in the hallway. People who knew my name. Said good morning like they meant it. A support worker I could bring anything to. People who noticed when I was quiet and asked if I was okay."

That's what EHM does. It doesn't just give someone a roof. It gives them people.

"The hardest day of my life was saying goodbye to my wife and baby in Nicaragua."

Meet Horacio. He and his wife Amanda had built a life they were proud of in Nicaragua – they were engineering professors who had just welcomed their first baby.

But in 2018, Horacio had to leave everything behind and come to Canada alone, as a refugee – no home, no family, no certainty of when he’d see them again.

His first stop when he arrived was a crowded shelter.

"I was grateful to have a roof, but there was no privacy. No quiet."

Then, he found Evangel Hall Mission.

"The first day I arrived, the staff didn’t just walk me to my apartment. They showed me where people came together.”

For the first time since arriving in Canada, Horacio felt like he belonged somewhere.
