Theatre Direct 40th Anniversary

Theatre Direct 40th Anniversary Theatre Direct is celebrating 40 years of exceptional, ground-breaking, thought-provoking, boundary- We have unveiled our 4-decade history in 5-year chapters.

Theatre Direct is celebrating 40 years of exceptional, ground-breaking, thought-provoking, boundary-pushing theatre and we invite you to take a stroll down memory lane with us! Each chapter contains archival images, raves from the media, anecdotes about the creation of certain plays and drawings from children reflecting on their experiences. Each chapter also recognizes the compelling work created

by 40 years of artists who brought their talents to our mission to engage and inspire young people through theatre. Along the way, we ask you to help us raise funds for our anniversary season through our 40 for 40 Campaign. Help Theatre Direct continue to be “ahead of the curve” speaking directly to young people, tackling serious and even controversial subject matter, reflecting the diversity of our country and finding innovative ways to reach out to new audiences. Theatre Direct has been leading the way for the past 40 years and your donation will lead the way towards 40 more. At the conclusion of our 40 year reveal, witness interviews with actors, directors, and playwrights discussing their favourite moments in Theatre Direct’s history and their hopes and wishes for the next 40. Hats off and big thanks to the incomparable Glenda MacFarlane for her work on this project and the creation of our 40th Anniversary feature on the Theatre Direct website.

This chapter of Theatre Direct’s reveals a company at its most prolific.

The world premieres of Binti’s Journey, Sanctuary Song, and The Demonstration, multiple productions of Beneath the Banyan Tree, and the school tour of Offensive Fouls. While Theatre Direct was expanding its national and international reach it was also preparing for a move to a community hub in the Artscape Wychwood Barns where it established its year-round Drama School and initiated its arts for early-years research with the Dora Award-winning Walking the Tightrope.
