The Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers Campaign team, is excited to invite you to attend our in person office event organized by the Diversity, Inclusion, Recruitment and Retention (DIRR) Committee, in conjunction with the amazing Contemporary African Voices event.

This event will give you the opportunity to have an interactive discussion with a panel of SLF staff directly involved in the Grandmothers Campaign, and gain insight on the marvelous work our DIRR is doing. You will also have the chance to attend the Contemporary African Voices event, featuring Alpha Nkuranga, a Rwandan-Canadian writer, in conversation with Garvia Bailey.
Alpha’s memoir “Born to Walk” talks about her struggles as an 8-year-old during the Rwandan Civil War and subsequently lived in refugee camps in Tanzania and Uganda, where she overcame the odds to graduate high school and attend university. She came to Canada as a refugee in 2010 and currently lives in Kitchener, Ontario, where she works for Women’s Crisis Services of Waterloo Region.
Joining her will be Garvia Bailey, Toronto-based, small town raised and Jamaica born, Garvia is an arts journalist, broadcaster, host, producer, writer and co-founder of jazzcast.ca. Throughout her career, she has interviewed many celebrated international artists and hosted a variety of arts programs including with the CBC, Hot Docs, Toronto Public Library and TO Live.
