How often do you stop to reflect on your relationship with your neighbourhood? What activities do you enjoy doing in specific neighbourhoods? What do you love about these neighbourhoods, and what small changes would make a big difference in how you experience them? Or, better yet, think about them in a fun way. For example, if the neighbourhood were a song, what would it be? If it celebrated a holiday, what would it be?

We loved this yarn activity! It is tactile and analog; it asks you to be present, dare we say, connect with your inner child, and gives you this transparent representation of everyone's answers and diversity.

With the final question on this board, we also found out that participants liked and enjoyed the installation. We heard only feelings of happiness, creativity, connection, inspiration, and gratitude!

Please help us answer this: How could this activity support your community, neighbourhood, or workplace? What possibilities do you see here?

Hula Hoop Canopy / Canopy of Connections - Activation for Park(ing) Day Toronto 2026 🟥🟦🟨

Hula hoops wrapped in magenta, blue, and yellow cellophane created a bright canopy over a space with seating and two engagement boards. These boards invited people to connect with each other and reflect on their ties to the Annex neighbourhood.

A number of people dropped by out of curiosity, took part in the activities, shared some really interesting conversations, and appreciated it

Thank you to Dubbeldam Architecture + Design for organizing Park(ing) Day Toronto, and KPMB Architects, Gow Hastings Architects, Arup Canada, and Fast + Epp for making this activation possible.

🌿 Canopy of Connections 🌿This weekend, we invite you to come and escape into a place of colour and connection with us! Beneath a dazzling canopy of suspended hula hoops wrapped in gleaming blue, orange, and pink, this park(ing) day activation turns an everyday corner into a vibrant retreat.

At the heart of the space, interactive activities wait for your touch. Share your connection to the Annex, leave a kind word for someone new, or simply enjoy the shade and soak in the energy of the space.

Join us in reimagining how this corner can spark moments of togetherness! 🌟

Relationships are where most of our learning happens. They challenge us, comfort us, and slowly change how we see ourselves and others.

Through shared experiences and honest connection, we grow not in isolation but alongside one another. Our lives are shaped by who we choose to show up for, and who shows up for us.

Our relationship to place is built slowly. Through daily routines, shared moments, and the quiet feeling of belonging that develops over time.

Places offer both grounding and possibility. They give us something to return to, and something to imagine beyond. In shaping our environments, we are also shaping ourselves.

As humans, we live inside stories. We tell them, pass them on, argue with them, and carry them with us. Over time, they do their work quietly reshaping how we see the world and each other.

Like water on stone, stories don’t need force to create change. They need time, attention, and connection.
